Griffin and Licht played some more in game 3. Awesome. Be afraid, be very afraid.

I don't know what to make of this. Was Nebraska really that good or was Tennessee really that bad, I'm going with the latter. The Vols are not ready for primetime.

Except for a few errors, Nebraska looked really good. I know I'm biased, but I was pretty surprised how clean they played for a season opener.

Same question was asked of me from a friend that normally doesn't watch volleyball. My first response was "Huskers are just that good"... but then I paid more attention, and Tennessee couldn't pass... at all. Jump floaters, so I'm thinking the latter. I recall the coach for Tennessee saying this is a very young but deep team, they definitely showed their inexperience

Did they take Stoyanova out? Leah Hinkey was impressive and good job for Milan Clarke to get a starting position.

Griffin and Licht played, but it looked like more of a look at the 6-2. Rotate Pavan and Holloway out, Licht and Griffin in. I think Cook hinted he would throw some of this in. At least this gives some rest to Pavan from her recent injury.
It looks like tomorrow's match up against UCLA will be a great test. UCLA played great floor defense against Utah, and Spicer was once again awesome at setter. Those swings against Tennesse won't be terminations tomorrow night, we'll see how Nebraska can transition. Overall, I was disappointed in the level of play that Tennessee was able to attain, some big time fundamental flaws... one blocker jumped into the net on the way up... not sure what that was about.

There were a lot of things to like about the Huskers performance tonight but what I really enjoyed was seeing Christina out there and playing pretty darn good. Her passes were right on the money nearly every time and I saw some of those blistering attacks from a couple years ago. She just needs a bit more playing time to get her full confidence back and then she will soon be back to her old self except as a better defender.
I also loved that our middles are very solid. Both Cooper and Stalls each hit .429 on 7 attacks with 4 kills and 1 error. They also each had 3 block assists. That's pretty consistent. Early in the match, it looked like Cooper was actually doing better than Stalls and then Stalls comes back with a couple of CRUSHES to even things up.
Pavan surprised me. For some reason when I was watching, I didn't think she was having a very good attacking night but then I see she hit .417. There were a few tips in there that UCLA probably wouldn't let drop but then she probably won't use that shot much against them either. She just knows what the defense gives her and uses it.
Larson ... what can you say about her. She hit .522 with 9 digs and 3 aces with no errors. WOW! Her attacking was really a step above last year and her passes and digging was nearly perfect nearly every time.
I sure have to say that Nellie Spicer is an awesome setter. She really turned some BAD passes into very nice sets ... BUT I'll take Holloway over her any day. Rachel just seems to have a better court presence to me and her defensive skills have improved so much. She is going to keep things under control and organized.
Yes, Tennessee was severly outmatched and UCLA will be a much better test but at this very early point in the season, I'm impressed with the Huskers.

What a yawner. AVCA needs to do something about scheduling this tournament. At least both of tomorrow's matches will be competitive and entertaining. Anytime UCLA and Nebraska match up, it's a good time.

I disagree. I think the only area Nebraska struggled today was setting. Holloway was not getting the ball in the right position at the right tempo. The hitters were doing way too many tips. These girls are high ball hitters.... they were all a step late on most sets. I don't think Nebraska should be playing that fast of an offense.... let those big girls do what they do best.

Congrats on a fine performance Nebraska and good luck vs UCLA. On the bright side for Tennessee, what a wonderful experince for these players to get to play in that environment!
It was truly unfortunate to have to play Nebraska game #1. They are the defending national champions and fully expected to repeat. Tennessee started a new setter (Berg), a freshman OH (Fowler), a new middle (Powe) and their most eperienced Sr player in her first match since an ACL tear (Yulia). Tennessee will rebound and get better very fast as this group learns to play together.
There are only handful of teams that could have performed better under these circumstances.
Go Lady Vols!

Struggled with the setting, come on. NU had 4 hitters hit over .400 with Larson hitting over .500 & also Licht hit .333 in her first college match & you say that Holloway struggled with her setting! What more do you want? For this early in the year I thought Holloway looked great. Most all the tipping to me were just smart attacks by the hitters when they saw the openings that UT was leaving trying to protect against the Huskers powerful attacks. Pavan in the past I always thought never looked the most comfortable tipping or using the soft shot. Last night I thought she did. Also last night is the first time I ever saw Pavan go for the soft shot in the corner like she tried last night a couple of times which she just missed out of bounds. Houghtelling never looked comfortable with the tip or soft shot in the past either but I thought she looked comfortable doing that last night when the opportunity presented itself.
