As expected: Morrison, Tama, Brick, Deesing, and Hagglund at Setter
But the other OH is Kindra Carlson and the opposite is Becky Perry. Perry's not so surprising but Carlson is. Good to see the freshman getting starts. Wonder if it is just a some rotation experiments but damn...
In other news, Perry's hand is wrapped because Christal dislocated a finger off of a kill and Perry was trying to block.

uw in g1 at -21.
Hagglund needs to connect with dees on the slide better. otherwise she is playing really well. she connects with Perry really well.
Tama is, by far, the best player on the team right now.

Serving sucks (except Tama and Christal). passing is ok considering it's the first game.
10-6 in g2.

I'm not sure I like the idea of Jim starting both Becky and Kindra. HOPEFULLY it's just for the preseason to get them playing time since they are both new...but Mussie is a proven player and should start in the real matches... and I love to watch jill so she BETTER get playing time

I don't know, Kindra played AWESOME, she's a big time talent. I'd be surprised if she hit under .400. Serving needs to improve a lot, way too many errors. Jenna definitely has better hands than Courtney, her sets are more effortless, but she doesn't quite have the "factor" Courtney had... at least not yet. Becky is going to be really good too. Overall I'll give them a B for the first match of the year.
Oh, and San Francisco is not too bad when they are on.

I don't DISLIKE the new faces, but it's Stevie's last year and she can out hit all of the new players...and Jim needs to give Jill a chance to step up and be a leader. Jim should make the new players feel welcome but at the same time he shouldn't alienate the old players all of the fans love to watch. Only Christal has more experience hitting than Mussie, and there is no one more popular than Jill...I WANNA SEE THEM PLAY! lol

Becky did a pretty decent job at defense, I think. Kindra gets high on the attacks and the blocks. Is there no game tracker for this match?

Another surprise: McAffee played back row for Carlson opposite the setter -- not Aratani. She did a fine job from what I could see, too. I saw Tama doing the jump server during warm-ups. I thought there wasn't a lot of velocity on it, and I wondered whether she was going to sue it during the game. She did; she started off with two aces. Shows what I know . They've got to reduce errors, which I think is what we were saying at this time last year as well. I thought Hagglund was having trouble connecting on the quick sets as well as the slides. But that's going to get a lot better as the season progresses. The stats are up: gohuskies.cstv.com/sports/w-volley/stats/2007-2008/classic2.html. Carlson hit .600, so I guess we know why she got the start. Becky Perry had good numbers too, but she seemed to have some trouble with passing. Stevie Mussie seemed to play with more authority, but then her numbers didn't look all that good. And yes, I think they were trying some things that they may not go with for the whole season. I won't be at tomorrow's matches, but I'll be interested to see what they then.

I think that the new faces did a fine job attacking, and in defense of Mussie she only played game 3...if she had more touches I'm sure she would have put the ball away more. And Mussie played when SF was playing REALLY well. I do agree that Jenna seemed to not be very good setting the slide, quick set or backrow...which kinda takes all of our experienced players out of the mix (Brick, Dees, and Morrison when she's back row) but it will come in time. I think Jill hit very well in Courtney's system.... last year everytime she played she had great numbers and we won. I think that Jill just needs to adapt to the new setting style... I just personally think that Jim looks kind of stupif praising Jill's arm the best he's ever coached, yet that arm sits on the bench......right....

In defense of Jim, there are several things Jill needs to do to get into the game: pass, block, and hit in bounds. I have only one clue about whether she's doing these things, and that's a comment posted here after the scrimmage saying she was hitting out a lot. Jim's generally not stupid, and it will take more than having Jill on the bench to make him look that way. I do suspect she'd be more effective as a serving specialist than Aratani -- certainly more fun to watch.
I do remember a few effective pipe sets from game 3. I suspect much of the effort over this year will will be getting to the point where the offense can hit on all cylinders. Jenna will probably be working on timing, set placement, and set selection for her whole career; that's what setters do.
The bright spot for me was the play in the back row. It seemed like any time Tama or Megan touched the ball, Jenna got a good pass or dig and was able to run the offense in system. That's got to bode well for the season.
