Berkeley, Calif. – The FIU volleyball team was pushed to the limit against Northeastern in Friday’s season opener, and yet the Golden Panthers came away with the come-from-behind victory, taking a 3-2 (21-30, 30-22, 25-30, 30-21, 15-11) decision over the Huskies in the first match at the Cal Molten Classic in Berkeley, Calif.

Lauren DeTurk led a trio of Huskies (0-1) in double figures with 20 kills. Brittney Brown and Kira Batura added 13 and 11 kills each, respectively, while Leah Neubeck.
Tied 10-10 in the deciding fifth game, FIU received back-to-back kills from Vergun and Rosa to start a 5-1 run to close the match.

Volleyball falls to FIU in five gameswww.gonu.com/volleyball/2007/game01.htmI'll just say that I couldn't quite figure out FIU. They started off really slow. Most could recognize that their physical talent was far superior to Northeastern. They had a poor game followed by a blowout. In their poor games, they were just making too many mistakes. Game 5 was odd. Northeastern got out to a 4-0 lead only to have FIU take a 5-4 lead. Strange.

Strange. the program has made quite the turn around in the past 2 seasons under the new coaching staff. they have brought in great recruits and look to continue their winning ways. last year they played a bunch of highly ranked teams and even though they lost in 3, they were close games. How is Rosa looking for FIU? she is coming off an injury and hasnt practiced much.

Who, or what, is FIU? Seemed to be an assorted bunch of East Europeans and Central Americans coached by a Central European. Why do these anomalies occur, and what's the point of them?

FIU is Florida International University. and as you noted, we use the international very well. It's part of the Florida State University system. It sounds "private" but apparently was created in response for the demand for a public research university in the Miami area during the late 60's/early 70's. While the team has tapped into a lot of international talent, a good deal of the team are US players. Several players on the team are Spanish speakers, which is pretty much in line with most of the student body at FIU.
