This one was a total mismatch, with the Badgers winning 30-16, 30-12, 30-13. The Running Bulldogs just couldn't do much right, getting outhit .376 to -.091 and having only 14 kills for the match.
The Badgers used a lot of different lineups in the match, as Klingsporn set the entire time. Dykstra and Simpson were the only Badgers not to play. AWack and Dolgner started at left side, JWack at libero, Salow at right side, and Jeffers and Reineke in the middle. Dolgner got taken out for the match at 24-10 in the second game after recording six kills, some of the vapor trail variety. DuPont played well after that and added six kills on nine swings. AWack had 10 kills and 11 digs in a nice effort. She and DuPont both played back row when they were in, which gives them some good experience. Salow led the Badgers with 13 kills, hitting .500, and added three blocks. She also faced the libero for the Running Bulldogs with a bomb from the left side. Ouch.
The Badgers outblocked Gardner-Webb 6-1 for the match, as the Running Bulldogs tried to hit around the block with little success and quite a few errors. I thought Klingsporn set pretty well after some first game jitters. The Badgers also served pretty tough. JWack had four aces and served some huge runs with her new topspin jump serve.
Finally, JWack actually ceded the libero jersey for the first time in her career to Kuzma in the third game. Kuzma did a pretty good job, and JWack got in late as a hitter. She hit two back row attacks way out of bounds, which led to some laughing on the Wisconsin bench, but she ended the match with a front row kill from the left side.
I hope the Badgers will go with what they expect to be their regular lineup against Syracuse so they can get used to playing with that. It is nice to get everyone playing time, but they will need to have their best team on the floor next weekend. This match really wasn't much of a test, as the Badgers played solidly and GWU horribly. On the other hand, Syracuse-UWM was a pretty good match, with the Panthers winning in five. I think the Badgers should be able to handle the Orange tonight, as Syracuse has a good libero but probably not the firepower to score on the Badgers with regularity.
