Iowa State swept the Hawkeyes 30-25, 30-22, 30-23 in Des Moines (Drake tournament) this afternoon. The Cyclones improve to 5-4, while Iowa falls to 5-2. Cummings led ISU with 14 kills at .370, while Boeve added 13. It looks like they have turned things around with Manns back in the lineup. I don't think Iowa is great, especially without Smale, but at least Iowa State is back to beating teams they should be beating.

They also beat Drake tonight (3-0) to go to 6-4 overall. That's five wins in a row, including at Northern Iowa (5K+ fans) and against #21 LSU at a neutral site.
State is now 8-0 against teams from Iowa since Christy Johnson came on board. The record before that was absolutely atrocious.

Christy has done a really good job there; it is important that they continue their success this season. That program was pretty downtrodden before she got there. Struggling against the other Iowa schools was not a good thing, especially since Iowa and Drake were not exactly juggernauts.
On the other hand, the Iowa State football program seems headed in the opposite direction. Losing at home to UNI is bad. I guess they can earn redemption by beating Iowa, but I doubt that will happen.

ISU had it rough at first, but has been playng much better.
The win over UNI was nice. It was a good, competitive match, but ISU would pull ahead just at the end of each game to win it.

Wasn't their starting setter on suspension for some reason for the first several matches? If so, I believe she should be back now and that should upgrade their skills considerably. Hopefully that will raise the level of the Big 12 which had a rather weak start.
