Last week marked the one year anniversary of Cal Poly's place amongst the top 25 in the nation as per the AVCA Poll. For that program to have gone from 223 (going into '05) to current Pablo ranking of #6 is truly remarkable. They have done it by playing the toughest schedule in the country: Nebraska, Penn State, and Stanford. Then mix in #15 BYU (as per Pablo), #18 Creighton, #25 Wichita State, and #37 St. Mary's. Who has played a tougher schedule...?

Who has played a tougher schedule...? Washington.... .... football that is. Brutal schedule this year. For volleyball I don't know... Nebraska's played some solid teams every week... I really have no clue at all.

For volleyball I don't know... Nebraska's played some solid teams every week... I really have no clue at all. Let's see. Tennessee, UCLA, Cal Poly, Penn State, Duke, New Mexico State, and Texas. I think that may be the toughest schedule in the country so far, and they've only dropped one game to UCLA. And welcome back to the board coach.

Going by rankings to determine "toughest" schedule must be done with care. First, there's the assumption that rankings is a proper gauge of volleyball team strength (and it's not a bad assumption, although I would argue rankings is a good measure of GROUPS of teams, not individual teams.). Second, assuming rankings is indeed the proper gauge, everyone knows rankings change as the weeks go by. You can certainly argue that Cal Poly has the "toughest" schedule but you can only do so with respect to TODAY (or this week). As the weeks go by, rankings will fluctuate. By the end of the season, it may turn out that Hawaii had the toughest schedule after playing #6 Oregon State, #8 KState, #12 Wichita State, #2 UCLA, #4 Michigan, #27 Santa Clara, #32 Louisville, #10 NMSU (twice), and #11 Nevada (twice). (Note: the rankings in the previous sentence were fabricated by me for illustrative purposes.) Realistically speaking, one of the Pac-10 teams will probably end up with the "toughest" schedule and Cal Poly's schedule will be much diluted by the weaker Big West teams.
Paso Robles has been hot lately, huh? I like to run around in Avila Beach myself. Did I tell you about the time I actually swam with dolphins!!! Yes, in Avila Beach!! Well, actually not "swim". I was in the water for a short time on my boat and there were a couple of dolphins around me. So, I jumped in. A few seconds later, they came by and then swam away. But it was frikkin' incredible! Anyway, 5-6 years ago, San Luis Obispo was great. Now, the traffic is just a mess!
