20th Ranked Women’s Volleyball Falls to No. 4 Southern California in five games

COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 20th-ranked Ohio State (6-2) women’s volleyball team fell to fourth-ranked Southern California (9-0) in a five game (30-27, 20-30, 30-28, 26-30, 14-16) match Friday night in the second match of the Sports Imports Classic in front of 1,962 fans. The first match of the Classic had Purdue (7-3) defeating Oregon (10-1), 3-1 (30-27, 18-30, 30-27, 30-28). Ohio State’s Danielle Meyer (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) scored a team-high 22 points with 19 kills (.319) and six assist blocks. USC’s Asia Kaczor posted a match-high 27.5 points with 23 kills, three ace serves and an assist block.
Trailing 11-10 in game one, Ohio State scored seven straight points to open a 17-11 lead. The run included a Briana McCarthy (Sr., Beaver Dam, Wis.) kill, a triple-block by Ashley Hughes (So., Carroll, Ohio), Kristen Dozier (So., Sandy Spring, Md.) and McCarthy, a Meyer kill and four Trojan errors. OSU reached game point at 29-23 with a Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio)-Meyer block. The Trojans scored the next four points to trail, 29-27. A kill from Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) ended the game at 30-27. USC hit .200 for the game to .182 for OSU.
Southern California broke a seven-all tie with an 8-3 run to take a 15-10 lead. The Trojans held that margin at 24-19 before scoring four straight point to take a 27-19 lead. After a Trojan error (27-20), Southern California closed out the game with the next three points to win, 30-20 and tie the match at one game each. Southern California hit .311 for the game to .053 for the Buckeyes.
Ohio State held a 10-9 lead in game three before starting a 7-1 scoring run to take a 17-10 lead. USC trailed by two at 23-21 before two kills by Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.), one from Dull and a McCarthy ace serve gave Ohio State a 27-21 lead. Southern California responded with a 7-1 run to tie the game at 28. A Meyer kill set game point at 29-28 and a Trojan error ended the game at 30-28 to give Ohio State a 2-1 lead in the match. The Buckeyes hit .381 for the game to .273 for the Trojans.
Game four saw Southern California hold a 13-9 lead before four straight Trojan errors tied the game at 13. USC then scored the next eight points to take a 21-13 lead. Trailing, 22-14, two kills from Calhoun, one each from Dozier and Meyer, a Meyer-Dull block and a Trojan error cut the lead to two at 22-20. At 25-23, a McCarthy kill cut the margin to one at 25-24. At 26-25, a Diane Copenhagen kill and an OSU error made it 28-25. A Dull kill made it 28-26. Kills from Kaczor and Copenhagen closed out the game at 30-26 to tie the match at two games each. The Trojans hit .200 for the game to .133 for Ohio State.
Trailing 5-4 in the fifth game, Ohio State used a Hughes-Dozier block and a Meyer kill to take a 6-5 lead. USC, with a kill from Copenhagen and two from Kimmee Roleder opened an 8-6 Trojan lead. A McCarthy-Dozier block and a McCarthy kill tied the game at eight. At nine-all, an OSU error gave USC a 10-9 lead. Buckeye kills from Meyer and Calhoun and a Hughes-Meyer block gave the Buckeyes a 12-10 lead. The Trojans responded with kills from Kaczor and Bethany Johnansen to tie the game at 12 and with an OSU error took a 13-12 lead. A Meyer kill tied the game at 13. USC took a 14-13 lead with a Copenhagen kill to serve match point. A Trojan error tied the game at 14. A Copenhagen kill made it 15-14, USC, serving their second match point. Southern California won the game with a Buckeye error, 16-14, to win the match, 3-2. USC hit .240 for the game to .217 for Ohio State.
For the match, Southern California hit .246 to OSU’s .193. The Trojans had an 80-67 advantage in kills and an eight to four margin in ace serves. USC’s Kaczor posted a match-high three aces in the contest. Defensively, the Trojans had an 83-75 advantage in digs with Trojan Geena Urango recording a match-high 31. At the net, the Buckeyes had a 15.5 to eight margin in team blocks. OSU’s Dozier posted a match-high eight assist blocks for the Buckeyes. At setter, USC’s Taylor Carico recorded 63 assists while OSU’s Hughes had 52.
The Sports Imports Classic continues Saturday with Purdue facing Southern California at 4:30 p.m. and Ohio State hosting Oregon at 7 p.m.
