I'm not sure it's a given that Paolini will be the one on the bench. So far she is more versatile than Magee or Doris. Doris will end up being the best blocker on the team before the end of the year, but Paolini is a much better attacker than Doris right now. But Doris is ahead of where Paolini was her freshman year. Magee is still a finesse player who rarely makes errors, but her elevation, speed, and power aren't at 2005 levels.
In Engle's absence I've enjoyed watching them run the 3-MB lineup where Paolini switches between MB and OPP depending on who else is front row.

I think you're right on the money.

Just wondering, what has Doris done this year? She's started a few matches. She hit zero in her last match with 2 kills I believe.

The potential is there. It doesn't jump right out at you only four weeks into her freshman year, but if you study her movements you can see it. In a way I can't describe, she seems to be more of a thinker than an athlete to me. I could see her as the kind of player who will just go along for a little while being dependable but not flashy, and then one day she'll wake up and everything will click and play like an All-American for the rest of her career.
She will not get many points on kills for a while (of course next year the whole team will have to learn new setter connections). On blocking, her instincts to follow the opponent's sets are a little slow but you expect that with a new recruit. Fortunately, she's good with her form/technique above the net. I've seen a lot of fast tall girls who still can't smother the ball once they jump. Jen Doris is not one of those. Once she gets up to speed, a lot of hitters in the Big 12 will rack up errors trying to cut around her.

Well, I agree that Paolini is playing really well right now, and yeah she may not go to the bench. But, I definitely don't think Coach will sit Magee regardless of everything else. Magee is highly efficient, she is a senior leader, and she has a good shot. She comes up short in a lot of the fitness levels, but I still say you start her. Doris is probably the most likely, but I can see Coach deciding to keep her in and let her develop (albeit with a short leash).
Honestly, I think Doris would be a lot better and play with a little more confidence if she got a few more sets. Most of the time, she doesn't really make errors (though I don't know the exact stats). From watching the games, it seems like she's fairly efficient. But, the problem is most of the time she isn't getting a lot of power behind her shot. Still, in warmups, she looks pretty good. I think she's still playing with some freshman nerves. She'll shake them off!

It's not her ankle that is hurt, the problem she has is most likely related to the ankle injury from Thailand but it is on the other foot and is a different problem...an issue of over compensation from the ankle sprain perhaps?
