www.wacsports.com/ViewArticle.dbml?DB_OEM_ID=10100&ATCLID=1248023DENVER – Hawai`i left side Jamie Houston has been named the Western Athletic Conference Volleyball Player of the Week for the week of Sept. 17-23. This is the fourth career WAC Player of the Week honor for the junior, and her first for the 2007 season. The Huntsville, Ala., (Huntsville) native, came up big on the road, leading the Rainbow Wahine in kills with 22 at Louisiana Tech and 29 at No. 25 New Mexico State, also posting four blocks in each match. In the match against the Lady Techsters in Ruston she put way the final five points of the match with five kills on just nine swings. Houston is averaging 5.04 kills, 2.42 digs and 0.79 blocks per game on the season. She now totals 1,230 career kills for the Rainbow Wahine, and is just two short of emerging the UH career top 10 list. The Rainbow Wahine fought off six match points to win a thriller over the No. 25 New Mexico State Aggies, improving their record to 10-3 overall 4-0 in the WAC. Other nominees included: Alisha McKee of Fresno State had a season-high 20 kills and a season-high .333 hitting percentage in the Bulldogs 3-2 win over Boise State, marking their first road win of the season ... Kara Jones of Louisiana Tech tallied a total of 13 blocks and 25 kills in three matches last week ... Karly Sipherd of Nevada averaged 4.11 kills, 1.33 digs, .67 blocks and 4.78 points while hitting .304 as the Pack split a pair of WAC road matches ... Kim Oguh led the way for New Mexico State with 33 kills and 15 blocks, recording her first double-double of the season in the match against No. 13 Hawai’i ... Amanda Nielson led Utah State in a split pair of WAC matches, recording her second career double-double with a match-high 19 kills, 10 digs and a career-high tying 10 block assists against No. 25 New Mexico State.

Kudos to Jamie! She had a great week and it's nice to see her connecting better with Brandt. Hopefully, by midseason she and Brandt will be unstopable. Right on Jamie! Right on Bows!

Whoa what a surprise. I didn't expect it go to Houston. I did expect someone from the Wahine to win it this week. I think there was another player on the Wahine that was more deserving of the award than Houston.
But congratulations to her no doubt.

A bit of a segue but I alway get a kick when hearing / reading the WAC player of the week called the "WAC POW".

I give Jamie Houston alot of credit in her game....Remember people, this girl didn't play Volleyball for a long time as like other great players starting at a young age. She started to learn the game really late. So, I would only believe that her consistancy is not there alot of times vs. the likes of Klineman,Barboza,Larson,Tom,etc.......She became an AA last year which was her sophmore and alot of people never thought she'll make it. Give her time to absorb more of the game.....Congradulations Jamie!

Does anyone remember how Jamie started her freshmen season? When did she enter the starting line up? I'm asking because I'm curious as to what may happen to Ferrell. I'd hate for her to spend the whole season on the side if she's as good as advertised.

If I remember, Jamie started that first game her freshmen year when Hawai'i played in the AVCA Showcase when they were ranked #5 vs. #1 Nebraska, along with Penn St. #4 and Stanford #2....correct me someone if I'm wrong, but Jamie started that first match against Nebraska her freshmen year.

I don't think so. I can't find the official match info. but I can remember vividly the starters for that match was: LS: Arnott, Mason MB: Prince, Sanders S: KK OPP: Boogaard L: Watanabe So no Houston DID NOT start in that match. I think she actually may have started during the 3rd or 4th match of the season. Maybe the Penn State match or some match in that particular Tournament.

She replaced Mason, who was injured in the Nebraska match.

A bit of a segue but I alway get a kick when hearing / reading the WAC player of the week called the "WAC POW". I think in Jamie's case, it's entirely appropriate.

I LOVE Jamie Houston! She is such a power house of talent and power. With ore experience she can be on the national team. I would like to see her move around more in her postions other than the left. Kim W. and Teee W, played middle, right and left and where just so unpredictable! I am afraid teams will scout her and see that she is primary on the left. I would love to see her do that back row slide. That shot was AWESOME!

I agree, Jamie should be getting sets from all over, definitely more from the back. I remember Kim Willoughby was just deadly from the back. Jamie may not be as explosive as Kim, but she comes close. Another excellent backrow attacker was Sarah. She was very consistent and hit smartly, not forcing hits when blocks are well formed. Lily was so-so, at times, awesome.

I think the poster is referring to Mason. I think she actually hit better from the 3 meter line than on the left. Opponents had a hard time reading her armswing. Once in a while, she would loop it over the blockers with topspin using a fist. That's a tough shot to pull off.
I remember this one play against USC where Mason almost face-pegged Carico while spiking from behind the 3 meter line. Awesome.
