Does anyone remember how Jamie started her freshmen season? When did she enter the starting line up? I'm asking because I'm curious as to what may happen to Ferrell. I'd hate for her to spend the whole season on the side if she's as good as advertised. I think the situations in 2005 and now are very different. The Wahine had some depth on the outside in 2005, but Hittle was injured before the season even started and Mason went down in the opener. That left Arnott (who got ill early), Boogaard, Houston and Keefe, who was coming off a redshirt year recovering from surgery. Even Thurlby got to start four matches at opposite because of the injuries. Meanwhile, Ferrell has Houston, Otineru, Hittle and Keefe ahead of her this season, and I think she really was a redshirt possibility. So unless one of the four older players are unable to play, Ferrell isn't gonna be a starter. She wasn't even on the travel roster.

On a side note to all Kama'aina, they're broadcasting on digital cable FSN, Pac-10 volleyball on Saturdays. I have my recorder on for the upcoming USC vs Stanford match this weekend. It's delayed by one night, but at least we finally get to see Klineman, Roleder, and Ailes in action. It's free too.

I think the poster is referring to Mason. I think she actually hit better from the 3 meter line than on the left. Opponents had a hard time reading her armswing. Once in a while, she would loop it over the blockers with topspin using a fist. That's a tough shot to pull off. I remember this one play against USC where Mason almost face-pegged Carico while spiking from behind the 3 meter line. Awesome. I still stand on my opinion that Mason and Houston were so similar to Kahumoku and Willoughby. But ya, just a couple notches down. BTW, Sarah Mason is one of my favorite Wahine of the 2000s along with Prince, Boogaard and Watanabe. Mason will be IMO, one of the most underrated Wahine of all time. Seriously ... she could do it all. All of the little things ... she had it. All the shots: heat, placement, line, tools, tips, backrow .... monster blocker, a deadly float OR jump serve ... capable defender, solid passer. Can she set? I don't know, but ya, She had it all. I WISH the Wahine had her for more than two years.

Aneli is doing a great job on the left filling her shoes. But Mason was an awesome player on the left. Mason was a smart hitter, a great blocker, pretty much all that the above poster mentioned. I remember couple people saying at the end of last season that Mason will surely be missed next season and she sure is on the left side. Mason was a force not only at the net, but at the service line as well. I have to agree though I think Mason was a decent to good passer. She was one of the primary passers last season and she did a great job. Mason is no doubt on of the most underrated players of all time.

I still stand on my opinion that Mason and Houston were so similar to Kahumoku and Willoughby. But ya, just a couple notches down. I also have to agree. Mason and Houston were really similar to Kahumoku and Willoughby. You had the terminator in Houston and the crafty hitter in Mason. And this is jus comparing their front row, in terms of backrow Kim and Lily were far superior to Mason and Houston.

Mason was not underrated at all, she made an impact last season, and would've been an All-American this season if she was eligible. She peaked at the right time in her career and that really helped Hawaii last year. I thought she was amazing, had she stayed home and play for the Wahine from her freshman year, no doubt she would've been an All-American and she would've turned out to be an incredible player like Lily Kahumoku.

It's delayed by one night, but at least we finally get to see Klineman, Roleder, and Ailes in action. It's free too. Two nights, actually. Most Pac-10 matches are Thursday and Friday and the L.A. based production staff prefers Thursday matches to give them extra post-production time... I think this is required in Corvallis, Eugene and Pullman and perhaps Tucson too. In a large metro area, they can hire a production truck and staff to cut down on post-production time and, in theory, do live coverage. Since FSN is losing money on the women's VB package... they carry it as part of their conference-wide contract with the Pac-10... and they don't have to do live coverage, they generally don't. If FSN West 2 in L.A. has an open Thursday night and USC or UCLA has a big home match (they prefer high-school football on Friday night) and that match is chosen as the Pac-10 match of the week, FSN West might cover it live for their SoCal (and FSN Prime Ticket's satellite) audience and edit it to two hours for the conference-wide broadcast on Saturday. Last year, USC's first Galen Center match (against Stanford) was live on FSN 2 and FSN Prime Ticket and tape-delayed as part of the conference package (as a sweep, it didn't need to be edited).

While there is some truth that SJS is undersized compared to the Wahine the girls were clicking on all cylinders in this match.

Rightside players have to take the second ball if there's a sloppy pass and the setter can't recover in time.
