Just watched this on CSTV. Pretty exciting finish. Pitt wins 42-40 in the 4th game. Play got pretty sloppy at times but it is the first game of conference season. Congrats to Coach Beerman on taking the next step up

That doesn't say much for Notre Dame. What is wrong with them? Is Croal still hurt? I expected them to be better as their freshmen from last year gained a year of experience.

Yep. She may not play this season. ND is still too inconsistent, particularly on offense. The Irish still haven't really found someone they can go to on offense. Phillips is good, but I think she'd be better as a complementary player than as the #1 option. She's not all the way back yet. She was more involved vs. Pitt than she had been all season as she played three of the four games and per the box score had 28 swings (8 kills). Also, Stasiuk is hurt now, she broke a toe in practice. ND started with her at libero, then put her back at OH for games three and four.

Shouldn't Notre Dame be a perennial top 10 team? I'll never understand how they're not.

Shouldn't Notre Dame be a perennial top 10 team? I'll never understand how they're not. Maybe they are missing the technical coaching of Robin Davis. I see he is having a really rough start at Boise State - they are on an 8 match losing streak.

Notre Dame wasn't a top 10 team when he was there, were they? No, but I'm looking for a reason that they would go from being 30-4 two years ago to what they are today. Course, they did lose Brewster at the same time Davis left. That miiiight have something to do with it.

That team two years ago was full of seniors. There middles, outside, opposite and libero were all seniors. When this class is primarily seniors, 2009, Im sure they'll be pretty good. I wonder if this cycle will continue.

Notre Dame won't ever Ty one on again. If they can get a healthy Mal Croal back that will help the Irish cause a lot. At Notre Dame would she be considered a holy Mal Croal ?
As far as the game goes, there were a lot of opportunities for each team to take the 4th game after 30-30, but when some one is up by 1 in OT, they got to have a put away play. But Kelly Campbell was awesome with around 6 kills after 30-30. She had a couple attack errors during that stretch but she really kept Pitt in it.

That team two years ago was full of seniors. There middles, outside, opposite and libero were all seniors. When this class is primarily seniors, 2009, Im sure they'll be pretty good. I wonder if this cycle will continue. Brewster, Kelbley, Cooper, and Henican were seniors. (Two middles, one hitter, and the libero.) The setter was a sophomore, one hitter was a sophomore, and the last hitter was rotated among Croal and Heintzman, depending on who was hot. I'm not sure what the answer is for ND. If you look at last season, the only player hitting over .300 was Justine Stremick. If you look at this season, the only player hitting over .300 is Kelly Sciacca. Both seasons, Serinity Phillips is a bit north of .250. Getting Mallorie Croal back healthy can't hurt, as it gives the team another talented player, but she wasn't that effective last year. I wonder, idly, if ND shouldn't be trying to run a similar offense to whatever they were doing in 2005. Kelly Sciacca has had several very impressive games, but she is not getting a lot of swings relative to the outsides. Contrast that with 2005, where Lauren Brewster had more swings than anybody (and Lauren Kelbley who I think was also at middle, had the second-most).
