Atherstone Earns Third Big West Player of the Week Award www.gopoly.com/index.php?p=sports_news_detail&cat_sport=55&article_id=5221Via the strength of a 4.67 kills per game average during the No. 20 Cal Poly volleyball team’s conference-opening sweeps of Long Beach State and Cal State Northridge, Mustang junior opposite Kylie Atherstone garnered her third Big West Player of the Week honor in four weeks Monday afternoon. Against Long Beach State and in front of 2,127 spectators Fri., Sept. 21, Atherstone posted a match-high 15 kills, hit .344 against just four errors and recorded seven digs as Cal Poly (8-6, 2-0) successfully opened defense of its 2006 Big West title with a 30-27, 30-22, 30-17 defeat of the 49ers. The following afternoon, Atherstone again led all players with 13 kills while compiling six blocks and serving up four aces. Cal Poly downed the Matadors, 30-23, 30-22, 30-18. In addition to her 4.67 kill mark, Atherstone averaged 0.83 aces and 1.17 blocks per game last week. Among conference players this season, Atherstone ranks second in aces (0.46) and fourth in kills (4.23) per game. Monday’s honor was the sixth of Atherstone’s career. Only six players in the 23-year history of the Big West have won the award on more occasions. Atherstone earned the award twice last season and once as a freshman. Cal Poly continues Big West play Fri., Sept. 28 at UC Davis (3-10, 0-2) and the following evening at Pacific (7-3, 1-1). Both matches begin at 7 p.m. Cal Poly has won 19 of its last 21 conference matches, dating to the 2005 season.
