KKEA radio vowed to secure time on an additional station in the future, if necessary, to prevent situations such as what occurred Saturday night when listeners were left hanging for the final result of the University of Hawai'i's volleyball victory over New Mexico State.
KKEA, which had provided periodic updates, gave the last one at 13-13 in Game 5. The station switched to the UH football pre-game show as the Rainbow Wahine served for the match. The final result of UH's 30-26, 28-30, 30-27, 28-30, 23-21 victory wasn't given until 10 minutes later.
Upset fans contacted the station, UH and The Advertiser. UH volleyball coach Dave Shoji said at the time: "That was bad. Why would they do that?"
Monday KKEA carried UH-San Jose State volleyball and pre-empted Monday Night Football, general manager Randal Ikeda said. "In both situations, we could have called K-108 and said, 'hey, could you handle one of the games?' That way the listener doesn't lose a game," Ikeda said.
Ikeda said, "We were talking about it as a staff and I don't know why we didn't do it. We've done it before. We just forgot. I mean, there is no other explanation."
"It was an unfortunate situation," said John McNamara, UH associate athletic director. "But they have informed us they are going to identify another station to carry a game when they see a conflict and we think the fans will be pleased with that arrangement."
Ikeda said it has been station policy not to start a broadcast of one event if KKEA knows it will have to pre-empt it later for another event.
---i actually was suprised to see an article like this show up in the paper, i mean i opened up the paper as soon as i got to work, and i saw this one. but hey i agree full on with the upset fans on this one. i mean come on, what was their reasons for not being able to broadcast the game? yeah the football pre-game show! but it didn't start til like 4 and the wahine's started at 3. plus it was just a pre-game show, for what like two hours. they couldn't let the volleyball team have the spotlight for once, that pre-game show thing is real non sense. they only talk and joke around with each other the entire time, i mean no offense but the game would have been far more entertaining, and if you ask me its disrespect to the volleyball team, and their fans. how you may ask, well lets the main one being that this was a match that the team and fans were waiting for, it was a match where the fans wanted to see hawaii get back at the aggies for last year, and well the top spot in the conference. ok, i respect the hawaii football program, but honestly it wouldn't have hurt to let us all hear the game. especially a match like that, where hawaii was victorious. that only upsets me more. but hopefully they learned their lesson.
