Mike and Don were also best man in each other's weddings. I wasn't invited to either one. VBCOACH, I don't want to be a Northwestern fan, but thanks for the offer.

The Gophers had an 18-8 advantage in blocks according to my stats. Just goes to show you how meaningless those can be.

Here's what jumps out at me:
10 digs in 4 games from the RB. I need to check how they did against UW. I bet it's similar.
39 assists in 4 games.
11 blocks for Gibby!
65 swings for DeBruiser.
I'm surprised Roehrig only had 5 kills. 25 swings is pretty low, too.
This offense should be better.

The Illini's numbers are horrible. How do they win this match at Minnesota when they hit .142 and block only 8 balls?

The Illini's numbers are horrible. How do they win this match at Minnesota when they hit .142 and block only 8 balls? All in all each team had difference area where they gave the other numerous extra points. The Gophers gave up 1.75 more points per game in enforced errors than the Illini. Multiply that by 4 and you have 7 more unforced error points the Gophers gave to the Illini than the Illini gave to the Gophers. Then look at the total points scored by each team and you'll see that 7 points is the difference between the two teams for the match. - | Minnesota | Illinois | Games | 4.000 | 4.000 | - | - | - | Game 1 | 25.000 | 30.000 | Game 2 | 25.000 | 30.000 | Game 3 | 30.000 | 18.000 | Game 4 | 21.000 | 30.000 | Game 5 | 0.000 | 0.000 | - | - | - | Kills | 48.000 | 61.000 | Attack Errors | 28.000 | 36.000 | Unforced Attack Errors | 19.500 | 18.500 | Total Attacks | 163.000 | 175.000 | Attack% | 0.123 | 0.143 | - | - | - | Kills / Game | 12.000 | 15.250 | Attack Errors / Game | 7.000 | 9.000 | Unforced Attack Errors / Game | 4.875 | 4.625 | - | - | - | Assists | 45.000 | 55.000 | Assists / Game | 11.250 | 13.750 | - | - | - | Aces | 5.000 | 4.000 | Service Errors | 13.000 | 12.000 | - | - | - | Aces / Game | 1.250 | 1.000 | Service Errors / Game | 3.250 | 3.000 | - | - | - | Digs | 69.000 | 75.000 | Digs / Game | 17.250 | 18.750 | - | - | - | Covers | 12.000 | 9.000 | Covers / Game | 3.000 | 2.250 | "0" Attacks | 87.000 | 78.000 | - | - | - | Block Solo | 3.000 | 0.000 | Block Assist | 29.000 | 17.000 | Total Blocks | 17.500 | 8.500 | Block Errors | 3.000 | 0.000 | - | - | - | Blocks / Game | 4.375 | 2.125 | Block Errors / Game | 0.750 | 0.000 | - | - | - | Ball Handling Errors | 2.000 | 0.000 | Ball Handling Errors / Game | 0.500 | 0.000 | - | - | - | "Earned Points" | 70.500 | 73.500 | Opponent Error Points | 30.500 | 34.500 | - | - | - | "Earned" Points / Game | 17.625 | 18.375 | Opponent Error Points / Game | 7.625 | 8.625 | Points / Game | 25.250 | 27.000 | Effective Points / Game | 9.000 | 10.750 | Points / Errors Ratio | 2.043 | 2.410 | - | - | - | %age of Points from Opponent Errors | 30.198 | 31.944 | - | - | - | Match score from stats | 101.000 | 108.000 | Match score from game scores | 101.000 | 108.000 |

Funny, I didn't even think of DeBruler for FOY in the Big 10. I definetely think she has the potential.

With so many highly touted freshmen coming in this year I was wondering how she compared to the others. I know that she was the best to come here in a LONG time. We still haven't played PSU and their machine. The last I knew she was third nationaly in KPG for freshman and she's a good all around player. But the B10 season is yet to be half over so we'll have to see if she can continue at this level.

The Gophers had an 18-8 advantage in blocks according to my stats. Just goes to show you how meaningless those can be. No, that just goes to show you how pathetic the rest of the game was for you. If you win the blocking battle by 10, and lose in 4, you have some serious issues elsewhere.

Well, it's obvious where the big difference was this weekend. The Gophers were grilled by Dolgner and DeBruler. Right now, they don't have a go-to OH. Cumpston emerged as that player last year.
And I'm not laying it all on the OHs. It's a team effort, from passing/digging to setting to hitting, but they aren't putting the ball away.

The Gophers had an 18-8 advantage in blocks according to my stats. Just goes to show you how meaningless those can be. Not meaningless, just that they show up elsewhere. Since hitting pct subtracts errors, the high Minn block total is reflected there. The fact that Ill outhit them %wise despite the huge number of blocks basically means that Minn was getting lots of errors elsewise. Actually, as I look at it, the problem was that Minn wasn't getting the kills. In non-blocked balls, Illinois hits 61/19/158, and Minn hits 48/20/155. So they have about the same number of attacks, and the same number of errors, and the difference is the number of kills.

One thing about the blocks was that it was 6.5 to 0 in game three that Minn. won so that the blocking advantage wasn't quite so lopsided in the games UI won.

I was thinking about that as well. Look at the hitting in the games Illinois won
Ill 51/23/129 = .217 Mn 34/24/126 = .079
Given MN only outblocked them 11 - 8, Ill really controlled things outside of game 3.
Granted, it's not quite fair to throw out MN's good game, but it gives you an idea of what the match was like.

I'm a UI fan but I view this as an upset. MN is going to finish ahead of us, most likely third, because in the long run they'rre a better team. They're going through a bit of a slump but who besides PSU and UW isn't. We actually have a better road record than at home. Both teams are playing a lot of freshmen so that doesn't help. They're very talanted but they're freshmen.
