The Illini over the Gophers at 3 games to 1.
I just caught the tail end of the 4th game on the audio case so I don't know the game scores or match details.
I think the score for game 4 might have been 30-21 in favor of the Illini.

Did Brown play?

This team totally reminds me of the 2005 Gophers, alot of talent but no leadership.

Brown played, of course. That's the deal: teams can rest star players against Iowa and save them for the Gophers.
That said, Illinois outplayed them. This didn't really surprise me. Hardin almost always has his team juiced to play the Gophers. If he could find a way to prepare them as well for other teams in the Big10, who knows how good they could be.
I just hope Hannah Werth wasn't too concerned with how the team played this weekend, because it wasn't what I'd want a top recruit to see.
Basically, Brown and DeBruler were scoring at will for 2 games. Gophers seemed to have them both shut down in game 3, but they returned with a vengeance in game 4. Gophers then started committing error after error. This is what I recorded:
Illinois jumps out to 3-0 lead with Jones, Hagerty and Vatterrodt (who subbed in for Dieter at the end of game 2) in the front row. Gophers come back to tie and take a brief lead until the same rotation puts them down 15-12 (4 more real points for Illinois). Very next rotation, with Hagerty, Vatterrodt and Gibbemeyer trying to sideout, has Illinois score TEN straight points, in spite of two timeouts, and numerous different serve receive setups. In those 14 real points, Hagerty had 5 errors (2 blocks), Jones had 1, Vatterrodt had 2, and Gibbemeyer had 1. So that's 9 points right there. I haven't looked at my stats that closely, but I'd bet the Gophers struggled when Roehrig was not in the front row.
The offense is just not producing. Maybe it's the passing and defense. I don't have a clue anymore. All I know is that they are a 5th game win @ OSU from losing their last 4 matches. I still think the potential is there for them to turn this around, but something's broken right now. Maybe I'm reading too much into Illinois being overdue to have a match like this -- they did play well -- but I'm concerned.
I had to get my girls home, so I didn't stay for the reception and didn't hear what the staff had to say. Maybe someone else will tell us.

I just hope Hannah Werth wasn't too concerned with how the team played this weekend, because it wasn't what I'd want a top recruit to see. My sense is that when recruits are legitimately interested in a school and see them play this way they think "hmmm, I could come in and help this team right away." If it's an official visit, I doubt she's negatively influenced. Why were you listening (as opposed to watching) the match?

I was there. I never miss a match -- except when the wife's team is in the playoffs maybe.
Maybe that was the plan? Make Hannah feel sorry for us?
I just knew this was going to happen...

I didn't see that one coming. I know Illinois is a lot better this year, but they have been losing winnable matches recently. Basically, this means that the Big Ten is now a two horse race, with Penn State as a big favorite. I hope Jones will be healthy so they can push Penn State in Minneapolis. Congrats to Illinois on a big win. Brown and DeBruler give them two good options offensively, and it sounds like those two were on tonight. Now, they just have to figure out how to regain the magic at Huff.

I was impressed with Illinois on Monday night (Big ten tv). They played Purdue very tough in Huff Hall. It appears as if Dieter is disappearing and the setting leadership is suspect for Minny. Where do the Gophers go from here?

Dieter's probably where most thought she'd be at the start: very good backrow, offense needs fine-tuning. I think we were spoiled by her early success. Or maybe she's just worn out. I'm not sure they can afford to have her on the bench, however. They need her ball control.
Bright side: Gibbemeyer had a big match, blocking and hitting. Hagerty and Vatterrodt both showed flashes of good stuff. Roehrig was pretty good.

Yeah! plenty of bright spots for Minnesota in the home loss to Illinois. This absolutely shocks me. 2-5 Illinois beats Minnesota in the Barn annex and there are still bright spots. I am not so sure the Gopher fans are seeing too many bright spots tonight.

After seeing them go against each other, how would you compare Dieter and DeBruler?

I could become a Minnesota fan and you could become a Northwestern fan, and neither one of us would miss a beat.

UI seems to play better on the road this year for some reason. While favored against Iowa I was sorta surprised they swept consdering last weekend. I was just hoping we'd play well tonight , I certainly wasn't expecting to win.
PSU and Wisc. seem to be the only teams performing consistently well. Who knows what will happen when they play.
Both teams tonight play a lot of young players so things look good for the future of both.
A little bit of trivia. While most of you might know Don used to be an assitant for Mike at UI he also lives in Mike's former house in Champaign.

After seeing them go against each other, how would you compare Dieter and DeBruler? DeBruler's an offensive force right now, even against a double block. I'm not sure she's the all around player that Dieter is, but she ain't shabby. There's no denying she's playing better than Dieter right now -- and it's not like Bazzy's an AA setter either. And someone who should also be in the running for FOY.
