USC is a good team, but Roleder was the factor that made a big difference in the loss to the huskies. I mean, they probably would of lost anyway but it would have been a tighter match with Roleder contributing to the offense. I didn't understand why Mike didn't play Bishop alot when they needed a bigger block or some offense from her? .... UW played like a national championship team tonight and last night against UCLA. The freshmen setter Jenna is doin a great job at running the offense. Tamari, is a whole different story people!...... She is just unbelievable on D. She's probably the best libero in the country right now. At least that's what I think. Other people could agree with me on that. Can't wait for Stanford to come to town. I'm a really big fan of Foluke....

I'd have to vote Tama UW's MVP, she made some unbelieveable digs against USC and was the difference tonight. She sets the Huskies apart from the other teams.

I just don't feel like the LA schools are that good this year. I am impressed how Washington has bounced back from the Cal loss to get three big wins in a row. It looks like they will continue to be a power without Thompson, which I think had to be a question coming into the season, since their ascent into national elite status started with her arrival.

I have to agree with what Roofed said. She has the same set location for most of last year. Just about every commentator has commented that her set location is way off, but I'm beginning to think it must be where Mick wants the sets. I can't understand why. I don't know how a hitter can be effective hitting from the 10 ft line. Also... if that is the game plan, why are the hitters always running up underneath the ball?

I have heard that Tennant wasn't offered a red-shirt this year, so I think she is done for the year and wastes eligibility...too bad, she's a really nice kid.

I just don't feel like the LA schools are that good this year. The polls should start showing a true reflection on who are the best teams.

I think that being so deep into the season already, Kelli Tennant is going to redshirt, especially with the depth at the MB being sufficient at the moment (with Bishop and Williams). Consider her done for the year....Mick will burn a red-shirt year for her.

No seriously, why is Carico bringing the ball almost the full 3 meters off the net for nearly every set? Is USC that physically overmatched that Mick needs them to get so far back they can roll around the block? and yet, Mick still has four more DI titles to his credit than OverandUnder...hmmmm That's why I asked the question, smart guy, because I am hoping someone who follows USC (I don't) might have seen them enough to comment on whether this is indeed where Carico is supposed to be setting the ball. It is common to bring the set off the net for a shorter player or one with a lower vertical, so they don't get trapped by a bigger block. This is not special information, as you probably know. Let me use bigfan's typeface so even someone as "slow" as yourself will have a chance, however slim, of reading past a 5th grade level: Okay, question to the SC fans -- is Carico supposed to be setting the ball there? Maybe it's the camera angle, but I don't understand her location at all. No seriously, why is Carico bringing the ball almost the full 3 meters off the net for nearly every set? Is USC that physically overmatched that Mick needs them to get so far back they can roll around the block?
No seriously, why is Carico bringing the ball almost the full 3 meters off the net for nearly every set? Is USC that physically overmatched that Mick needs them to get so far back they can roll around the block? I'm not a coach nor a vball player...just a regular fan but here goes my 2 cents on this. USC's hitters are not over the block hitters, especially with the current OHs on the floor. Gysin is more like 6 feet or even less (and not 6-1 as listed) and I believe her jumping ability has been affected by her various injuries (which I think dated back to HS). Urango is like 5-10. Even Copenhagen is not an over the block hitter. Possibly the only one with the athleticism to do that is Roleder.. In past matches, when the sets were too tight, Copenhagen and Gysin often times tried to hit the balls right through and into the blocks, and these players do not have a wide repertoire of shots. Their main shots tend to be cross-courts most of the time, not line, rollshot and even tips were very rare. The only player whom I have seen been effective with tight sets is Kaczor and you can see that when there are well formed blocks, she would then hit the rollshot or tip or hit across her body for line shots or just tooling the blocks. Gysin and Copenhagen lack the shot making abilities of Ross and Burdine. So my guess is that the coaches design the sets to be off the net, and Carico is doing just that. Thank you, roofed! That is the kind of intelligent, reasonable, adult explanation I was looking for.
