Ohio State captures a 3-2 win at Illinois
Ohio State’s Danielle Meyer records a triple-double with 27 kills, 17 digs and 12 blocks in the victory.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (9-10 overall, 3-7 Big Ten) women’s volleyball team, behind Danielle Meyer’s (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) first career triple-double, won a 3-2 (30-26, 30-24, 29-31, 22-30, 17-15) decision at Illinois Sunday. Meyer collected match-highs of 27 kills and 12 blocks (one solo and 11 assists) and a team-high 17 digs to record her first-ever triple-double, recording a match-high 34.5 points. For Illinois, Vicki Brown had a team-high 21.5 points with 19 kills and five assist blocks.
Trailing, 16-15, a Katie Dull (Fr., Solon, Ohio) kill tied game one at 16. An Illinois error and a Dull kill put Ohio State ahead at 18-16. A Buckeye error cut the lead to 18-17, but an Illini service error and an Ami Stevens (Sr., Centerburg, Ohio) kill put Ohio State ahead, 20-17. At 28-24, OSU, kills from Laura DeBruler and Brown cut the Ohio State lead to two at 28-26. A Dull kill set game point at 29-26 and the Buckeyes won the game, 30-26, with a kill from Stevens. Ohio State hit .333 for the game to .250 for Illinois.
Illinois trailed 16-13 in game two and used a Stefanie Alde kill, a Buckeye error and a Johannah Bangert ace serve to tie the game. Ohio State then scored the next four points to open a 20-16 lead. The run began with a Meyer kill, an Illini error, a Kaila Calhoun (Fr., Elkhart, Ind.)-Kristi Hunter (Fr., Roblin, Manitoba, Canada) block and a Hunter kill. Illini kills from Alde, Brown and Amy Palash cut the lead to one at 20-19. Two Calhoun kills, one from Dull, an Illini error and a Calhoun-Dull block opened up a 25-19 Buckeye lead. At 28-23, a Meyer kill set game point at 29-23. A Buckeye error stopped the first game point at 29-24. Meyer closed out the game with a kill at 30-24 to give Ohio State a 2-0 lead in the match. OSU hit .263 for the game to .140 for the Badgers.

A Meyer-McCarthy block tied the game at 26. A Hunter kill and a Meyer-McCarthy block made it 28-26. A Lizzie Bazzetta kill and a DeBruler-Bangert block tied the game at 28. A Meyer kill made it 29-28 with Ohio State serving match point. A DeBruler kill stopped the match point and tied the game at 29. A Buckeye error put Illinois ahead, 30-29 with the Illini serving game point. Another Ohio State error gave Illinois a 31-29 win in the game. The Buckeyes hit .178 for the game to .146 for Illinois.
The Illini broke a 12-all tie in game four with a Brown kill, an OSU error, an Abby Nelson-Bazzetta block and a DeBruler kill to take a 16-12 lead. Trailing by six at 19-13, Ohio State scored five straight points to cut the Illini lead to one at 19-18. The run began with Buckeye kills from Hunter, McCarthy and Calhoun. Two blocks by Calhoun and McCarthy complete the run. An OSU error and an Alde kill put Illinois ahead, 21-18. Illinois closed out the game with a 9-4 run, winning the game off a Buckeye error at 30-22 to tie the match at two games each. Illinois hit .205 for the game to .043 for Ohio State.

With Ohio State leading, 13-10, the Illini cut the lead to 13-11 with a Nicole Kump kill. OSU reached match point at 14-11 with a Hunter kill. Illinois stopped three match points with two OSU errors and an Abby Nelson-DeBruler block to tie the match at 14. A Hunter kill gave Ohio State a 15-14 lead and serving a second match point. A Buckeye error stopped the point, tying the match at 15. A Calhoun kill gave the Buckeyes a 16-15 lead and serving a third match point. Ohio State, with a Calhoun-Dull block, won the game at 17-15, to capture the match, 3-2. The Buckeyes hit .179 for the game to -.036 for Illinois.
Ohio State hit .198 for the match to .151 for Illinois. The Buckeyes had a 73-70 edge in kills while the Illini had a five to two margin in ace serves. OSU gave up 10 service errors to 12 for the Illini. Defensively, Illinois had an 81-77 advantage in digs with Ashley Edinger recording a match-high 34 digs for the Illini. At the net, Ohio State had a season-high 23 to eight margin in team blocks. The 23 blocks (two solos, 42 assists) is the fourth-best team mark in OSU history. OSU’s 42 assist blocks ranks third all-time in OSU history. OSU’s Meyer had a match-high 12 blocks with a solo and 11 assists. Calhoun and McCarthy each posted 10 blocks with Calhoun recording a solo and nine assists and McCarthy, 10 assists. For the Illini, Bazzetta recorded a match-high 63 assists with OSU’s McCarthy recording 59.
The Buckeyes begin the second half of the Big Ten season with road matches at Iowa (9-12, 1-9) Friday and at Minnesota (12-8, 5-5) Saturday. The Minnesota match will be carried live by the Big Ten Network with an 8 p.m. ET starting time.
