This was definitely printed before the Texas-Nebraska matchup: sports.espn.go.com/ncaa/news/story?id=3076747Go to the link to read the full thing and runner-ups, but here's the gist of it: Midseason POY: Pavan Setter: Kehoe Freshman: Faucette Coach: McLaughlin Conference: Pac 10 Most Competitive Conference Tourney: MVC

Pavan is still the POY. She did nothing to change that.

The article mentioned Nebraska "looking unbeatable". Obviously premature.

Not sure I get the whole "Most Competitive Conference Tourney" category.....would love to know what the criteria are for that selection...it seems like more conferences are droppng their end of year tourneys...

According to "impartial indicators," the MVC tourney looks pretty competitive. Pablo: MVC: Wichita State 15, Missouri State 42, Northern Iowa 48, Creighton 71, Illinois State 73 RKPI: MVC: Missouri State 32, Illinois State 49, Wichita State 54, Northern Iowa 61, Creighton 65

so you think it is based on RPIs....

so you think it is based on RPIs.... It's the one that supports the contention. I like the MVC conference tourney because it is a tourney for a good conference where the top teams have shown themselves to be competitive with each other, having beat each other through the first round. I don't need RPI or Pablo rankings to make that assessment. Yeah, the top of the Pac 10 is tough, but they don't have a tournament. The top of the CAA looks to be a mess, and that could be a good tournament, but the overall quality doesn't compete. The Valley tournament has a lot of tournament implications for a lot of teams, and it could really go any way.

so you think it is based on RPIs.... If it all goes according to form, Pablo says WSU should win but, since MSU is the host, I expect a competitive final to the conference tourney. 15 Wichita State 8345 42 Missouri State 7790 +250 (Home Court Advantage Points are 250). In addition, the Valley always seems more competitive than the records or match scores indicate. For example, Northern Iowa and Missouri State lead the Valley in blocking. BLOCKS G Solo Asst Total Avg/G ------------------------------------------------------- 1. Northern Iowa....... 82 44 451 269.5 3.29 2. Missouri State...... 84 57 381 247.5 2.95 3. Southern Illinois... 79 47 343 218.5 2.77 4. Wichita State....... 75 58 277 196.5 2.62 5. Creighton........... 74 47 288 191.0 2.58 UNI is #9 in bpg and MSU is #33 according to current NCAA stats. Good blocking can disrupt other parts of a team's game. I am never surprised when an underdog wins in the Valley.

Yeah. This category really doesn't make too much sense. I will agree that the MVC Conference tourney would be competitive and enjoyable to witness the way the conference schedule has gone. And the Pablo and RPI numbers both indicate the teams are pretty close to each other. I'm not sure how the A-10 snuck in there. It should be competitive between Dayton, _avier, and SLU (especially since it will be at Charlotte, a neutral location for all three) But looking at results within the conference, and by what happened last year, I don't think any of the other teams will make it competitive. The only two matches I can think of where one of the other 7 teams took games against the top three teams were Temple ( 5 games against _avier) and Fordham ( 4 games against _avier in which they were tied 1-1 and up 9-0 in game 3 but ended up losing) And last year in the tourney. Xavier took out Charlotte pretty easily, and SLU beat Fordham and Temple to get to the Finals, in 3 for both of them I think.

It brings up a curious situation...if a team / conference does away with the end of season tourney...the automatic bid goes back into the kitty....if you consider men's basketball for comparison only....it seems strange that a conference would give away an automatic bid...

I thought that the automatic bid goes to the conference regular season champion, like the Pac 10.

What the....
They actually consider the WAC as Fourth Best Conference?!?!!!!!!??
Say what?
I know NMSU has been solid and steady this year and Hawaii is well... Hawaii. However its only two teams out of nine... That's around 20% of the conference. Nevada, Idaho, SJSU, and USU are the next tier, however I wouldn't call them better than some of the other second tier teams in other such conferences as WCC, SEC, MWC. Can someone please bring some relevancy to this?
The three latter conferences I named don't have more than one school in the Top 20, but the others in the conferences are probably better than those of the WAC. So what gives...?
