First President Dobelle gets the boot and now UH doesn't have enough housing to house all the incoming freshman and returning students.
It was announced last week that UH is 1,400 beds short. They have placed 1,400 people on the waiting list. With the shortage, some students from the mainland and neighbor islands are still without housing so they are scrabbling to find off-campus housing.
With the shortage of beds, no one that lives on the island of Oahu got housing. Even though that sounds okay because they live on the island and they just can commute, but for some that lives on the other side of the island will have the hardest time getting to school. Because if you live on the north shore of the island or on the west side, expect an hour to two hours to get to school because of the traffic. And if you have to catch the bus the commute time will be even longer. That just really sucks for the people that live on the island because I have friends that live on the island that are scrabbling right now to find off-campus housing in town closer to UH because they don't want to commute from where they are currently living.
So in the past week lots of real estate and apartment complexes have been getting lots of calls from UH students about renting apartments and homes. In the next month or two it will be really hard to find a place to live on the island because of all these students will be taking up all the rentals in town.
How is this for bad news for the University. First the president gets fired and now they don't even have enough housing to fit all their students. I have a feeling that with the housing shortage, lots of students will be transfering out because they won't be getting housing and this will make incoming students in the future think twice about coming to UH because of the housing crisis.
