Lwood, let me get this straight. You want to outlaw mittens? I sort of skimmed through the thread. Let me know if I missed the gist. ;D (Its, you need to go see "Sunshine" again. You can't really have been bored.) You did miss the gist. Read the exchange between ItsAllAboutMe and myself.

Lets put it this way. As long as what you are doing is not hurting anyone else then live & let live. That's as simplistic as I can put it without getting long winded

I bet the reality is that you do not really feel that way. Assuming that everyone involved is a consenting adult (21 years old), are you for legalizing prostitution, drugs, and polygamy? Before you say yes to any of these think of someone in your family that you love and ask yourself if you would be okay with them doing these things that harm no one else.

Lwood, Oh yes in "reality I do feel that way"
Drugs...Hmm. Beer is legal & I'm all for that drug being legal. Though I don't smoke weed I have several friends who do occasional enjoy that. I don't have a problem with that. They're highly intelligent individuals who don't hurt anyone, if fact 2 of them are in the health care field. Wonderful guys who help people & don't hurt anyone.
Prostitution, Hey! I'm a caring and compassionate guy and if legalizing prositution would make your job easier, LWood, I'm all for it, thats just the kind of guy I am.
Polygamy, hmm as a gay man who can't get married I find that just greedy, no need to rub it in. Help me out here, what does the bible say about Polygamy? Polygamy doesn't hurt me unless I'm paying more taxes because of some pologamist getting to claim more exemptions on his tax return.

I wish more "open minded liberals" would say it like it is. If you really believe that everything should be legal and you don't care about the degredation of society then speak up. Good for you. I get tired of people on the left acting like they are on the right. If you are on the left then be proud of it and say so. (BTW I'm not being sarcastic or humorous. I really do appreciate your honesty. But I also disagree with your opinion.)

Hey, I thought you liked humor. Yep, because I label my self a liberal means I agree all things go, atleast according to you who doesn't know me at all. I have to conclude your a far right conservative which means you like to go back to the good ol days when everyone was so innocent. Back when people got married because they had too. Hell, why stop there, even though I don't know you I will tell you what you believe in, first; a women's place is in the home, she should be subserviant to her husband. Birth control should be outlawed. I wouldn't want to stretch your views on these kinds of things because you wouldn't do that to me.

You're the one who got on the world wide web and said you don't want anyone legislating morality. I asked if you are serious about what you are saying and if you had really considered your stance. You said that you are serious. I did not stretch your views. You said you don't want morality legislated and you are for live and let live. My wife has a master's degree and is a professional who works from home. We do use birth control and have two beautiful children. Thanks for asking.

LWood, You miss quote me. My exact quote was. Republicans say they want less government in our lives, I agree with that but they don't have any problem trying to legislate their morals on everyone else. If you plan to quote me please be accurate. You forgot this part. So you are saying that it is okay to legislate morality? It just has to be the correct morality? Is that what you are saying? I'm having a hard time following you. Please instruct me.

I've made it very clear that I dont Want [glow=red,2,300]Republicans[/glow] & [glow=red,2,300]Religious zealots[/glow] legislating their morality on the me. I've have never said I don't want laws against criminal activities. Your the one that has run off on the extreme. Do you need examples or are just trying to be difficult.
The current Gov. is run by Rep & a President who is nother more then a puppet for the Religious zealots.

You do realize that there is no such thing as criminal activities unless someone legislates them as being criminal activities?
I think what LWood might be getting at with his qestions is how you can rationalize being okay with your own views on various activities as being considered criminal acts and be so adamantly opposed to someone else's views on other activities being consider criminal acts?
Though I do consider myself to be a Christian, why is it okay to ask "What does the Bible say about..." as opposed to "What does the Koran say about..." or "What do any other religious writings say about...."?
We live in a society where the people in office DO legislate morality, always have legislated morality, and likely always will legislate morality.
The good thing about that is that (at least in theory) if you can convince enough people that you're right and the people in office are wrong you can get them voted out of office (or in "extreme" cases impeached / removed from office before their term would normally expire) and move on to the next set of officials to act upon their own set of morals.

I large part of why Lwood & I not connecting on any level deals with the diffinition of Liberal. Now, given Rush's description of Liberals I would not be one, the far left would consider me moderate, Lwood I assume would consider me extreme extreme left.
Though I have friends that occasionally have a joint I hardly classify that in the hard drug catagory. I've always found in interesting that beer is legal but weed is not. Beer can often be found to be the fuel when ever there is fight, wife beatings & various acts of violence. People who get high don't get violent but they are almost as bad behind the wheel of a car as a drunk. We have some many CEO's who get caught in white collar crimes that often wipe out the retirements & ruin the lives of people who worked they're whole lives to ensure they would be taken care of when they got old. That CEO who ruined so many lives will get a slap on the wrist while the guy who got caught will some weed ends up getting more time. I have a real problem with this.
I believe abortion is a womens right & not for me, especially since I'm a man, to tell her she what she can & can't do. We all know if it was Man that carried the baby there wouldn't be any question that abortion was legal.
With so many problems with the "institution of Marriage" Christians decide that gays are threat to the institution. Well, it's easier to attack gays then to really deal with the problem with marriage. So they go after gays and feel like they've done something good for marriage. Now they can home beat their wife, cheat on her then get a divorce and marry again. Hell, why wait to marry when when you can just marry any ole stranger on the street. Then after getting married to the stranger they can spend their honeymoon watch some tv show where you the viewing public get to choose who is going to marry who on this weeks reality show. (I'M STRONGLY FOR GAY MARRIAGE/ OR EQUAL CIVIL UNIONS). Hell, every athiests can get married, I don't see the those against Gay marriage all up in arms about that.
I not against prayer in school as long as you do it on your own time. Which there is always plenty of time to pray in school if you want. The problem is those who say they are not allowed to pray in school don't want to pray by them selves, Oh no, they want to have it led over the school intercom. Thats fine if your in a private school but not a public school.
Thats the kind of Liberal I am. I'm not for criminal activities. I've never advocated that prostitution is legal. To say that Open Minded Liberals are for the revocation of prostitution & legalizations of all laws, polgamy is just not true. I'm am a self proclaimed Open Minded Liberal. Where we differ is on the meaning of that. You Lwood, have been listening to too much Rush. The Republicans have done a great job of redefining the meaning of Liberal. We have differing fews on that meaning & thus the it makes it difficult to converse with you. Rush has taken the meaning of Liberal and done a great job of trying to make it sound awful. He thinks Liberals are to blame for every woe society has, going back to the beginning of time.
I do believe my views are liberal & open minded. You may paint it different & try to pin these exaggerated views on liberalism is you wish. It has worked well for the Rep. to distort the meaning of being Liberal.

To my mind a key to the discussion here is "criminal activities".
Criminal activities are legislated and frequently (If not always) based on some sort of moral judgement of those that enacted laws against those activities.
You bring up your own set of issues involving that conflict on your own with your comments on the differences in treatment of societal usage of alchohol and that of "drugs".
Why is it okay to "legislate morality" in making it generally acceptable to consume alchohol and unacceptable to consume "illicit" drugs?
Why is it not okay to "legislate morality" for making gay marriages illegal?
Why would it be okay to "legislate morality" to make gay marriages legal?
My guess is the reason is that one or the other fits our own sense of morality and desires while the other doesn't.
Frankly, I have no problem with allowing gay marriages and also think there are more important issues for the government to be spending their time on than that particular issue.
OTOH: I'm sure there are many others who believe that is the most important issue in the country to have resolved.
