No. 10 Ohio State Men's Volleyball Sweeps Juniata, 30-24, 30-21, 30-22
Buckeye Mark Greaves has 19.5 points with Andy Cole adding 12.5 in win.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The Ohio State (2-0 overall) men's volleyball team used solid performances by Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) and Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) to secure a 3-0 (30-24, 30-21, 30-22) victory over Juniata (0-1) Friday night in St. John Arena. Greaves had 19.5 points in the match with 17 kills, hitting .680), adding two ace serves and an assist block. Cole had 12.5 points with 12 kills, hitting .450, adding an assist block. Eagle Cordt Withum had a team-high 11 points with 11 kills for Juinata.
Game one was tied at 13 when an Eagle kill by Glenn DeHaven and an OSU error gave Juniata a 15-13 lead. The Buckeyes responded with kills by Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) and Greaves and a Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio) and Greaves block to put OSU ahead, 16-15. A DeHaven kill tied the game at 16 but a Spurlock kill and a Juniata error gave OSU an 18-16 lead. Leading 24-22, the Buckeyes scored the next five points to open a 29-22 lead. The run had kills from Spurlock, Cole and Wauligman and two from Greaves. Juniata closed to 29-24 but an Eagle service error ended the game at 30-24 for OSU. The Buckeyes hit .400 to .321 for Juniata.
Tied at four in game two, Ohio State had a six-one run to open a 10-5 lead. The run began with an kill and solo block by Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.). After service errors by both teams, Mathews added two ace serves around a Juniata error to complete the run. At 16-13, OSU, blocks by Spurlock and Mathews and Spurlock and Wauligman and another Mathews ace along with an eagle error put the OSU lead at 20-13. Greaves closed out the game with a kill for a 30-21 win. Ohio State hit .696 in the game to .296 for the Eagles.
From a five-all tie, three Juniata errors and an Eagle kill from Nick Bernardo gave OSU an 8-6 lead. A Greaves kill and a Stuart Katz (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) ace serve made it 10-7 after an Eagle kill by Cordt Withum. A Juniata error and kills from Cole and Katz made it 13-7. A Juniata kill from Withum and an ace serve from Bernardo cut the lead to 13-9. An Eagle error, two kills from Cole and one from Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) put OSU ahead, 17-9. Juniata would cut the lead to four at 21-17, but get no closer as a Brett Versen (So., Centerville, Ohio) kill ended the game at 30-22. The Buckeyes hit .424 for the game to .400 for the Eagles.
Ohio State hit .488 for the game to .338 for Juniata. The Buckeyes had a 51-40 advantage in kills and a 9-1 margin in ace serves. Juniata gave up 16 service errors to 13 for OSU. Defensively, Ohio State had a 23-17 margin in digs and out blocked Juniata, seven to one.
The Buckeyes continue the home stand Sunday when they host Springfield College at 7 p.m. in St. John Arena.
