Erie, Pa. - The Mercyhurst College men’s basketball team and first-year head coach Ryan Patton started the season off on a winning note with a 3-0 win over Clarke College on Friday evening at the Mercyhurst Athletic Center.

Senior Austin Siewert (York, Pa.) led all scorers with 16 points on 11 kills, three service aces and two blocks. Siewert also led the Lakers in hitting, with a .786 mark on 11-of-14 attempts. Classmate Dave Schmidl (Webster, N.Y.) contributed 14 points on .556 hitting with 11 kills, an ace and two blocks. Dan Kick (Blasdell, N.Y.) controlled the Mercyhurst attack with 33 assists on the evening.
Erik Vogt was the Crusaders’ top man with 7.5 points on five kills and 2.5 blocks. Andy Accacian had 12 assists in the losing effort.
Mercyhurst assumed control of the match early as a Schmidl kill put the Lakers up 10-3 in the first game. Mercyhurst later used a 7-3 run to go up 17-8 and outscored the Crusaders 13-5 for the remainder of the game as the Lakers closed finished the run on a block from Nate Keegan (Gibsonia, Pa.) and Dan England (Rochester, N.Y.) to win the first game 30-15. Keegan would finish the match with 12 points on the night.
Lineup changes from the Crusaders’ bench put a more formidable team on the floor in the second game as Clarke took an early lead and held it until Siewert’s kill gave the Lakers their first lead of the game , 9-8. Clarke battled back to tie the game at 10-10 before a Justin Waas (Spencerport, N.Y.) block followed by a kill gave Mercyhurst a 13-10 advantage. Later a 7-1 Mercyhurst run fueled by two kills each from Siewert and Schmidl gave the Lakers a comfortable 22-14 lead. Four Clarke errors down the stretch would enable the Lakers to finish the game on an 8-4 run to win 30-19 and take a 2-0 advantage in the match.
Clarke battled even harder in the third game, one that would feature three lead changes and 11 ties before Mercyhurst took the eventual 30-24 win. The Lakers held a 10-4 advantage at one point before Clarke went on a 11-4 run to take the lead at 15-14. Clarke retained the lead until a Waas kill gave Mercyhurst a 21-20 lead that they would not relinquish as the Lakers scored five unanswered points at one point, allowing them to take control of the game and earn their first win of the season over their MIVA rival.
Mercyhurst will face Clarke again tomorrow at 1:00 p.m. in an effort to improve to 2-0 on the young season.
