Varsity Sweeps Alumni, 32-30, 30-24, 30-27

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Varsity defeated the Alumni 32-30, 30-24, and 30-27 in an exhibition match at the Stan Sheriff Center tonight.
The Alumni night matches were broken up into three separate time frames: members of the 1950s to the 1970s squads; members of the 1980s to the 1990s; and those from the 1990s to last year.
In the Varsity match, it was a very competitive best of five won in three by UH. The Warriors were led by Matt Bender who slammed down 10 kills, while Pedro Azenha had nine and Lauri Hakala added eight.
The largest margin the Varsity led by was six, which was the final score of game two, 30-24.
The Alumni was led by four-time All-American Costas Theocharidis who put down a match-high 16 kills. Aaron Wilton added seven kills, while Eyal Zimet and Jason Olive contributed six apiece. Dejan Miladinovic led all blockers with four.
In the first match of the evening, the White squad (Mike Among, Kirk Christman, Ray Evans, Aukai Gonzsalves, Troy Hotz, Cid Inouye, Victor Poppinga, Manny Relator, and Malu Sagiao) swept two exhibition matches 20-12 and 20-16 over the Green squad (Alex Berganio, Clyde Ching, Jim Danz, Thomas Davidson, Guy Jennigs, Mason Kuo, Pono Maa, Mitch Varney, and Dalwyn Wong).
The second match saw the Green team (comprised of Mike Among, Kirk Christman, Cid Inouye, Imai Karratti, Mason Kuo, Kahinu Lee, and Pono Maa) take both exhibition games from the White squad (comprised of Alex Berganio, Kale Feldman, Aukai Gonsalves, Troy Hotz, Kai Kahele, Victor Poppinga, and Malu Sagiao) by scores of 23-21 and 20-15.
The Warriors (2-1) open Mountain Pacific Sports Federation play Jan. 19 & 21 against Cal State Northridge at the SSC with both matches slated for a 7 p.m. first serve.
