UC Santa Barbara Upsets Long Beach State
Patak rings up 31 kills in four-game victory
SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The 13th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men’s volleyball team broke into the win column with a convincing 3-1 victory over fifth-ranked Long Beach State in the Gauchos’ MPSF conference-opener. The win improves UCSB to 1-3 on the season, 1-0 in conference play, and drops the 49ers to 3-2 on the season and 1-1 in MPSF action.
Sophomore outside hitter Evan Patak rang up a match-high 31 kills, hitting .462 in the rescheduled match, while also picking up five digs and combining for two blocks. Senior middle blocker Michael Kennedy was second on the team with eleven kills, and tied teammate Nate Wack with a match-high two solo blocks.
With the Beach up 26-24 in game one, Bryan Berman put away one of ten kills on the night, sparking a 5-0 UCSB ran with the remaining four points coming off of Berman’s serve. Following a 49er sideout, the Gauchos capped game one, 30-27, with a Patak kill.
UCSB rallied once again in game two. Down 21-18, the Gauchos went on a 7-1 run to go up 25-22, and once again, four of the home team’s points came off the serve of Berman. Santa Barbara would eventually win the second game 30-27, out-hitting LBSU .419 to .364, to go up two games to zero.
The Beach responded to the two-game deficit by handily taking game three from the get-go. After jumping out to a 9-2 lead, Long Beach State steadily increased its lead our the Gauchos, ultimately claiming game three 30-19 with its balanced attack. Paul Lotman, Nathan Hagstrom, and Duncan Budinger each put away four kills in the game for the 49ers.
Both squads battled back-and-forth in game for with neither side taking more than a two-point advantage until LBSU went up by three at 19-16. The 49ers eventually stretched their lead to 27-22 and it appeared as if they were going knot the match up at 2-2. But once again UCSB rallied with a 5-0 run, capped by both of Wack’s solo blocks to tie the score at 27-27. Both teams continued to trade sideouts, moving the score to 32-32, until Patak put away a cross-court kill just inside the far corner to put Santa Barbara up 33-32. And on the ensuing 49er attack, Kennedy went up by himself to stuff Teddy Liles’ attempt, giving UCSB the game and the match, 34-32.
Next up for the Gauchos is another rescheduled MPSF match on Monday, January 17th against UC San Diego at 7:00 p.m. in Robertson Gym.
