BUFFALO, New York - The University of Findlay Men’s volleyball team (4-0, 0-0 MIVA) traveled to Buffalo, New York this past weekend to compete in the 2005 Nickel City Invitational. Coming into this weekend the Oilers had won the Nickel City Invitational for three straight seasons. This year was no different as the Oilers went 3-0 and did not drop a set.
On Saturday evening Findlay faced off against host D’Youville College (0-2) in the opening round of the invitational. Findlay managed to defeat the Spartans in three sets by the scores of 30-26, 30-21, 30-26. Findlay hit .385 for the match against a Spartan team average of .184. The Oilers had three athletes that registered double digit kills in DaveFranklin (Sr., Kettering, OH) 15, JimDziczkowski (Jr., Richfield, OH) 13, and C.J.Macias (Fr., Fort Lauderdale, FL) 12. Even distribution can be accredited to setter ChrisKeen (Sr., Indianapolis, IN) who dished out 47 assists (15. 66 apg). Franklin tallied a team leading hitting percentage of .684 while CoreyOliver (Jr., Indianapolis, IN) was second, hitting for a .500 clip with 8 kills. JoshEnlow (Fr., Mesa, AZ) led all Oilers at the net with 7 total blocks.
Today the Oilers defeated Rivier College (1-2) in three straight sets by the scores 30-27, 30-21, 30-24. For the match Findlay out-hit Rivier 2.99 to .053 while tallying 52 kills compared to Rivier’s 24 kills. Keen distributed 41 assists in three games, with 30 of them coming from the outside hitter combo of Macias (18 kills) and Dziczkowski (12). Macias hit for a match high .571 while Dziczkowski hit for a very respectable .350. Libero DanPlotts (Fr., Tuscon, AZ) led all defenders with 7 digs, while JohnBreen (So., North Andover, MA) ripped 3 service aces. Oliver and Enlow each contributed 4 blocks against the Rivier attack.
In the final match of the invitational the Oilers defeated Medaille College Mavericks (1-1) in three straight sets (30-28, 30-23, 30-22). Findlay hit a season high .557 compared to the Mavericks .186 hitting percentage. The outside tandem of Macias and Dziczkowski once again led the Oilers by pounding 15 and 12 kills, while hitting .684 and .625 for the match. Keen added 37 assists, 9 digs, and 3 aces for a solid performance. Oliver also continued solid play by ripping 9 kills with a .389 hitting percentage. Plotts and Enlow both tallied career highs, Plotts with 8 digs while Enlow added 11 blocks (3 solo, 8 assist).
For their efforts the Oilers placed three member on the Nickel City Invitational All-Tournament Team. Jim Dziczkowski was named Tournament MVP while C.J Macias and Chris Keen joined Dziczkowski on the All-Tournament Team.
The Men’s Volleyball team will return to play next weekend with three big matches. On Friday, January 21 they will travel to Erie, PA to compete in their first MIVA match against Mercyhurst College (2-0, 2-0 MIVA) at 7:00 pm. On Saturday the Oilers will challenge EIVA member Rutgers-Newark University in a home match at 7:00 pm. The Oilers will cap off the weekend with a 3:00pm non-conference match against #10 The Ohio State University Buckeyes (3-0, 0-0 MIVA) held at Elder High School in Cincinatti, OH. This non-conference match will be the third time the Oilers and Buckeyes will face off to promote boy’s volleyball in the state of Ohio. Last season the Oilers defeated the Buckeyes in this match, which was held in New Madison, OH at Tri-Village High School.
