The book I’m currently reading makes reference to a children’s book titled Understood Betsy (by Dorothy Canfield Fisher). I remember my children — back when they were little preteen kids — reading this book and loving it. I never bothered to read it because I was too busy raising those little runts. So, I looked it up and it’s supposedly a beloved children’s book. I suppose I should finally read it myself.

Understood Betsy (by Dorothy Canfield Fisher)
I'm currently reading a pre-teen children's book. LOL!
My kids read it and loved it. I never read it. I should start.
I kinda like it. First few paragraphs:
Elizabeth Ann, the leading character, is a 9-year old girl who lives with her Great-aunt Harriet "in a medium-sized city in a medium-sized state in the middle of this country." Great-aunt Harriet was a widow "who was not very rich or very poor." LOL! So, she's like you and me and everyone else but not like the Asians, Blacks, and Hispanics. LOL!

I am looking for some novels that can cheer me up right now. To remind me of the positives in life. Maybe even something that is moving and touching, provided it is not too sappy or sentimental. Any recommendations?

Any recommendations? Lots of good books. I recommend you start with this one because it's a graphic novel and you'll finish it quickly. But it's great. One of the ultimate “cheer me up” books. Hyperbole and a Half (by Allie Brosh)

Any recommendations? I reread Hyperbole and a Half and I think I will have to retract my recommendation. Though I think it's a funny book, it may not be up your alley. A lot of stupid and sophomoric and ridiculous gags. I like them but I think you need to have a certain sense of humor and patience and open-mindedness that you may lack. LOL! Nothing personal. LOL! (This is where you say, "None taken.") By the way, I didn't realize it but Hyperbole and a Half has been widely acclaimed and have been on a lot of "Best Of" lists. I didn't think it's THAT great but still noteworthy.

Any recommendations? What happened in your life? Somebody died? Some bad news about your prostate? Might be just me but I’ve never needed any cheering up. I really do think I’m missing something in my brain that makes me sad — or sad for an extended period of time. I haven’t cried since I was a baby and even then, my mother said I hardly ever cried. “You were such a good boy.” My wife thinks I’m fooking weird that I never get sad, even after a death in the family. When I was in college, my classmates would often get depressed and worried and pressured to do well. I felt none of that. I just did the work and then moved on to the next bit of work. They said I was a fooking sociopath. That comment didn’t upset me either. But I am happy a lot. Even during funerals.

There are a few sections on depression in Hyperbole and a Half. If the description in it is true, I don’t think I’ve ever been depressed in my life.

Hyperbole and a Half (by Allie Brosh) This is 150% the greatest book of all time! (ps. I've never read it -- I'm judging that by the cover.)

Any recommendations? These are not novels but humorous essay collections by super funny writers: (I loved them all) Sex, Drugs, and Cocoa Puffs (by Chuck Klosterman) Naked (by David Sedaris) Me Talk Pretty One Day (by David Sedaris) A Supposedly Funny Thing I’ll Never Do Again (by David Foster Wallace) This one’s a novel: Neighbors (by Thomas Berger) — outrageous satire
