UC IRVINE TOPS USC, 3-1 (Boxscore)
Irvine, Calif. -- The UC Irvine men’s volleyball team topped USC 3-1 (30-22, 27-30, 30-25, 30-24) in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Crawford Court Wednesday.
No. 12 UCI improved to 2-4 overall and 1-1 in league action, while No. 13 USC goes to 1-5 on the year and 0-3 in conference play.
In game one, the teams were knotted at 9-9 before UCI went on an 11-3 run to open up a 20-12 lead. The Trojans could get no closer than six the rest of the way. The Anteaters out-hit the Trojans .417 to .241. USC hurt themselves by committing nine service errors.
With the score tied 26-26 in game two, USC used a UCI blocking error then rejected two UCI attempts to take the 29-26 advantage. Following a Trojan service error, Joao Grangerio ended the game with a kill.
UCI used four consecutive kills to open a 20-15 lead in game four and never looked back as they took the set 30-24 in game three.
In game four, the Anteaters led 7-6 before going on a 7-3 spurt, which included four Trojan errors to lead 14-9. That was all UCI needed as they went onto win the game 30-24 and the match 3-1.
UC Irvine was led by freshman Jon Steller’s 14 kills. Junior Steffin Rangel added 12 kills, two aces and a team-high nine digs. Sophomore Jayson Jablonsky recorded 11 kills and seven digs, while middle blocker David Smith had 10 kills and hit .692 (10-1-13) on the night.
USC was paced by Blake Tippett’s match-high 22 kills. He also added eight digs and three block assists. Grangerio put away 14 kills and Jimmy Killian had 57 assists in the loss.
UCI returns to action hosting No. 3 Pepperdine Friday (Jan. 21) in the Bren Events Center beginning at 7:00 p.m.
