No. 11 Men's Volleyball Defeats Rutgers-Newark, 24-30, 30-19, 30-25, 30-25
Buckeye Andy Cole leads OSU with 23.5 points in the victory.
COLUMBUS, Ohio - The 11th-ranked Ohio State (5-0 overall) men's volleyball team rallied from being down 0-1 to Rutgers-Newark (0-1) to secure a 3-1 (24-30, 30-19, 30-25, 30-25) victory over the Scarlet Raiders. OSU's Andy Cole (Jr., Glendale, Wis.) scored a match/season-high 23.5 points in the win with a match/season-high 22 kills (.531) and three assist blocks. For Rutgers-Newark, Andrew Pink scored a team-high 16.5 points with 15 kills (.367), an ace serve and one assist block.
Rutgers-Newark broke a three-all tie in game one, scoring the next three points off OSU errors to take a 6-3 lead. Trailing, 7-5, OSU rallied with kills from Stuart Katz (Sr., Port Washington, N.Y.) and Cole to tie the game at seven. A Pink kill and an OSU error returned the lead to the Scarlet Raiders at 9-7. Rutgers-Newark held a 14-12 lead when a kill from Eric Honsberger and a solo block by Henry Richardson made it 16-12 Raiders. A Rutgers service error made it 16-13. The Scarlet Raiders, with a kill from Richardson, a service ace from Byron Goff and a Richardson-Ben Bostaph block opened an 18-13 Rutgers lead. The Scarlet Raiders held the lead, winning the game, 30-24 with a Brian Honsberger kill. Rutgers hit .519 in the game to .300 for Ohio State.
Rutgers-Newark opened game two with a 5-2 lead. A Buckeye triple block by Scott Spurlock (Sr., Stow, Ohio), Daniel Mathews (Fr., Shorewood, Wis.) and Mark Greaves (Jr., Fenton, Mo.) was followed by a Raider error and a Layne Dreven (Jr., Pittsburgh, Pa.) kill to tie the game at five. At seven-all, a Richardson kill put Rutgers up 8-7. Back-to-back kills from Cole put OSU ahead, 9-8. A Buckeye error tied the game at nine. Back-to-back kills by Greaves gave OSU an 11-9 lead. A Raider kill by B. Honsberger made it 11-10. A Buckeye kill from Greaves, a block from Dreven-Mathews and a Rutgers error put OSU ahead, 14-10. At 16-12, a Katz kill gave OSU a 17-12 lead. Rutgers responded with a 5-1 run starting with kills from Richardson, E. Honsberger and Pink to cut the margin to 17-15. After a Greaves kill made it 18-15, kills by Pink and Bostap cut the lead to one at 18-17. Ohio State scored the next 10 points to open a 28-17 lead. The run started with a Katz kill, a block from Spurlock and Cole and a Greaves kill to make it 21-17. Blocks by Greaves and Spurlock and Spurlock and Cole were followed by kills from Spurlock and Cole. Two Rutgers errors and a Katz ace serve complete the run. Rutgers with a block from E. Honsberger and Richardson and a B. Honsberger kill made it 28-19. A Greaves-Spurlock block set game point at 29-19 and a Greaves-Dreven block ended the game at 30-19. The Buckeyes hit .419 for the game to .057 for Rutgers-Newark.

At 20-all, a Rutgers service error and kills from Mathews and Mike Wauligman (Sr., Cincinnati, Ohio) gave OSU at 23-20 lead. Rutgers kills from B. Honsberger and Pink cut the lead to 23-22. At 24-23, a Raider service error and a Katz kill made it 26-23, OSU. At 27-24, kills by Katz and Cole set game point at 29-24. A Buckeye service error made it 29-25 but a Katz kill ended the game at 30-25, OSU. The Buckeyes hit .433 in the game to .250 for Rutgers-Newark.

At 19-16, a Wauligman kill and a Raider error made it 21-16 OSU. A Goff kill made it 21-17. Buckeye kills from Cole and Greaves raised the score to 23-17. Two Rutgers kills by B. Honsberger and an OSU error cut the lead to 23-20. OSU kills from Cole and Wauligman made it 25-20. The teams exchange points the rest of the game with Spurlock's kill winning the game at 30-25. Ohio State hit .545 for the game to .188 for Rutgers-Newark.
Ohio State hit .427 for the match to .238 for Rutgers-Newark. The Buckeyes had a 74-54 advantage in kills while the Scarlet Raiders had a three to one margin in ace serves. OSU gave up 13 service errors to 10 for Rutgers. Defensively, the Buckeyes had a 36-23 margin in digs with OSU's Katz and Rutgers' Goff sharing match-high honors with eight each. At the net, OSU enjoyed a 16.5 to eight advantage in team blocks. Buckeyes' Spurlock and Dreven each recorded a match-high seven total blocks with a solo and six assists each. Buckeye setter Mathews recorded a career-high 68 assists while Ainsworth had 46 for Rutgers-Newark.
Ohio State goes on the road for the first time this Sunday at 3 p.m. when they face Findlay in a match that is being played at Elder High School in Cincinnati.
