The UC San Diego men’s volleyball team dropped its Mountain Pacific Sports Federation home opener to No. 8 Stanford 30-26, 30-21, 30-24 on Friday night in RIMAC Arena. The Tritons drop to 0-4, 0-3 MPSF while the Cardinal improve to 3-4, 2-2 MPSF. For the Tritons, Luke Honnette tallied a match-high 18 kills with a .464 hitting percentage. Stanford was led by Matt Ceran who notched 11 kills, while a trio of Cardinal finished with nine kills apiece. UCSD’s Dickens Tai registered a match-high 11 digs.
Honnette finished with 20.5 points for the match, while Reuben Danley added six kills and John Mark Wendler, Chris Sayers and Garret Smith each notched five kills apiece. Brooks Dierdorff tallied 28 assists in the first two games and Nate Jones played game three and added 11 assists. Adam Toren made his first appearance of the season after missing the first three games with an injury.
Stanford had five players with at least 10.0 points on the night. Ceran (11.5), William Clayton (11.5), David Vogel (11.0), Chris Ahlfeldt (11.0) and Craig Buell (10.0) scored all but four points for the Cardinal.
UC San Diego is back in action on Saturday, January 22 when it takes on the University of the Pacific in an MPSF match in RIMAC Arena. First serve is set for 7:00 pm.

"We had a great team effort overall. The offense was distributed evenly among the team," explained head coach Don Shaw. Freshman Matt Ceran led the Cardinal with 11 kills, followed by Chris Ahlfeldt, William Clayton, and David Vogel each chipping in nine. Senior setter Kevin Hansen orchestrated the offense, dishing out 41 assists and leading the Cardinal to a .420 hitting percentage. Stanford put on a blocking exhibition, stuffing UCSD at the net 20 times, a season high. The Cardinal return home to Burnham Pavilion for a rematch against Cal State Northridge on Thursday, January 27th. The Cardinal will take the much needed rest to get healthy and look to come into next week's action at full strength
