Hawks drop conference opener January 28, 2005
Quincy University had 15 attack errors in a 30-26, 30-20, 30-26 loss to Loyola of Chicago in Friday night’s Midwest Intercollegiate Volleyball Association opener for both teams at Pepsi Arena.
The Hawks tied the third game 26-26 on a kill by Niels Pedersen, a junior from Evergreen Park, Ill. However, the Ramblers closed out the victory by scoring four straight points.
Quincy trailed 14-11 in the second game but Loyola opened up a 21-14 lead on an attack error by Robbie Mendenhall, a sophomore from Salt Lake City, Utah. Loyola took its first double-digit lead of the second game at 26-16 when Quincy’s Jon Moreno, a junior from Simi Valley, Calif., made an attack error.
Quincy had seven kills and seven attack errors in the second game for an attack percentage of .000.
Joe Caruso, a junior from St. Charles, Mo., led the Hawks with nine kills, while Ryan Ehnert, a junior from Sussex, Wisc., finished with eight. Matt Lawrence, a junior from Chicago, Ill., had seven digs, while Pedersen handed out 14 assists.
Loyola, now 5-1 overall and 1-0 in the MIVA, was led by Chris Kozlarek and Scott Greene with 13 kills apiece. Krystian Krzyzak made 12 digs and Brian Guntli added 39 assists.
Quincy, now 2-2 overall and 0-1 in the MIVA, will close out its season-opening six-match homestand with a pair of matches next weekend. The Hawks host Carthage at 7 p.m. Friday, before hosting MIVA foe IP-Fort Wayne at 7 p.m. Saturday
