This is vintage Al Scates. He hasn't seen BYU before (and his team is playing at altitude). BYU wins the first night.
Scates looks at video, UCLA adjusts, and the next night they beat BYU.
According to the UCLA website, "Another key to UCLA's victory was its effectiveness in limiting BYU All-American Michael Burke to just four kills (.083) in 12 swings. Last night he burned the Bruins for 13 kills while hitting .450 with 10 blocks. In the loss Batista led the Cougars with 15 kills and Evans was limited to eight kills after leading BYU last night with 17."
So, the two guys who had a total of 30 kills the first night are held to 12 kills the next night. Like I said, classic Al Scates coaching.

Looks like BYU didn't take care of business in the middle. BYU didn't take care of any business anywhere. I guess the marketing and advertising department did tonight. 6000 fans. The setting was all over the gym. Pretty crazy.

From the looks of the stats, it wasn't Farting Al's tactical adjustments at all. BYU looks like they stank up the gym really bad.
UCLA writeup is bogus. They didn't stop Burke as much as BYU wasn't able to get him the ball. BYU still outblocked UCLA, though.
UCLA won at the service line (7 aces/10 errors/probably forced alot of bad passes too) and with their offense. And BYU stank it up.
Looks like Patterson had a bad night too.
Klosterman, getting statistically closer to McKinney territory for the second night in a row.

From the looks of the stats, it wasn't . . . Al's tactical adjustments at all. Check out this story: www.dailybruin.ucla.edu/news/articles.asp?id=31738Two video sessions, change where they are serving from, use a different setter . . . Nahhh, Scates' adjustments couldn't have had anything to do with the win over BYU.

OMG...not the Daily Bruin! A totally unbiased source, absolutely. Is that Diamond Leung dork still covering Bruin volleyball?

The author either wasn't at the match or doesn't know jack sh-- about volleyball. UCLA would have lost to any average MPSF team Saturday night. They played a better match in their loss on Friday. BYU was just that bad. They were shanking regular jumpserves all over the place. Moving your serve line back when playing at BYU??? Wow, no one has ever thought of that before...It has taken Al Scates 15 years to figure that out? Must be why they hadn't won in so long up in Provo. BYU played so poorly on Saturday it really was pathetic. And whenever they started gaining momentum Burt would call a lift or double hit (all night) or they would serve it OB and kill the rally themselves. They had several chances to put down kills at the opposite and both Batista and Patterson hit balls into the net. Pathetic. Their block was the only good thing for them. No, they did not shut down Burke, BYU's passers did. He only had one or two all night that were on the net. Gonzalez was no better than Acevado, but atleast he had the brains to see the BYU block wasn't in the middle. His sets to his middles barely cleared the net. At the end of game 3 when BYU finally put a block on the middle, the MB didn't even have to jump to block the ball. I saw one of the best matches Friday night for both teams and the complete opposite Saturday night. UCLA kept their serves in. They didn't make as many mistakes. They played solid volleyball but were beatable, and they let BYU beat themselves. After watching these matches this weekend I would have to say that the MPSF is wide open. Home court doesn't guarantee anyone a win. I have to say on a side note that I was amazed at the talent level of Ivan Perez for BYU. He has the potential to be a 1st team AA. I had Ossie flashbacks watching him jump and hang in the air.
