It's amazing how people's perspectives are completely molded by who they are rooting for (or against). I guess it is true that we see things through our own set of glasses. I was at both matches and don't agree that UCLA gave BYU a good match on Friday night and a mediocre match on Sat. I have been at almost every Bruin match this season and they looked like a different team Fri. night. Every time they caught up and had a chance to win a game, they didn't. They missed a lot of serves and made a lot of hitting errors. The boys played very flat and slow. Even though Gaby has played great all season, Fri. wasn't a good night for him. Dennis was probably a good choice for Sat.
Saturday night the Bruins were much more animated and focused. They made most of their serves, made better setting choices, and hit more consistently. Even though Klosterman didn't hit well, he did other things well, like serving and getting an awesome match- winning block. The Bruins played well enough to win despite Klosterman's low hitting percentage. The others on the court were hitting well and we were still winning, so Scates gave Steve a long leash even though there are great players on the bench that he could have brought in. I thought that Kraushaar and Johnson hit well Sat. night. not flashy, but very effectively. Ker and Kraushaar passed well. Acosta, Gonzales and Vince played a good match, too.
One good strategy was to just serve right at Batista. He couldn't pass. I wouldn't say that UCLA played great on Sat. night. I have seen them play better this season. But they definitely figured out how to win. Scates, Rofer and Sealy did an excellent job coaching.
I do agree that BYU played even worse Sat. night than the Bruins played Friday. I looked at the official stats after the game and I just have to say that BYU's stat man was exceedingly kind to the Cougars by listing only about half of their hitting errors. And yes, there were maybe a few double contact calls that helped the Bruins, but the previous night, there were several that hurt us, especially the great kill by Johnson that was called over the net. All in all, the refs did a good job, I thought.
Go Bruins!
