UCSB wins the match in 5 games.
From Stanford's website:
Stanford, Calif. - The Cardinal suffered its second consecutive MPSF defeat to a hot USCB team 2-3 (30-23, 24-30, 30-28, 24-30, 16-18) in an exciting five game match. Deadlocked going into game five, the Gauchos' Evan Patak overcame the valiant effort by the Cardinal, giving the Gauchos their fifth win in six matches. "Our guys are playing really hard, but in order to be successful in the MPSF we have to eliminate mistakes, and find a way to shut down other teams' big hitters," explained head coach Don Shaw in response to Patak's game leading 48 kills. Stanford overcame numerous leads by the Gauchos, but were unable to turn the corner and solidify the win against the single-pronged UCSB attack. In game one, with the Cardinal ahead 26-19, Ben Reddy entered the game after a three match hiatus due to injury. Stanford rolled on to snatch the game 30-23 behind William Clayton's seven kills.
After dropping game two, the third game featured a collection of unusually long rallies. A huge block by Craig Buell and Kevin Hansen gave the Cardinal its largest lead at 26-21, boosting the crowd's enthusiasm. The Gauchos tightened the match up, trailing the Cardinal 28-29 before a UCSB service error put Stanford ahead 2-1. Stanford stumbled out of the gate in the fourth game, yielding an early seven point deficit to the Gauchos. The Cardinal closed within two at the halfway point of the game, but the Gauchos squeaked out the win forcing the decisive game five.
Kevin Hansen administered 60 assists, the majority to Craig Buell who slammed down 16 kills. The Cardinal's record dropped to 3-6 (2-4 MPSF).

Here is the problem - Patak is a very good player. He takes a lot of swings. He MUST stay healthy and he MUST not have an off night.
If Patak goes down UCSB will have a difficult time. They learned this last year.
74 swings is amazing in a match. 48 kills is amazing as well. I hope someone who was at the game can tell us more.

From the UCSB website
Seventh-Ranked Gauchos Continue Stay Hot, Top No. 9 Stanford in Five Games Evan Patak has career-high 48 kills to set a modern day AVCA Division I-II single-match record.
Jan. 29, 2005 Stanford, Calif. - The 7th-ranked UC Santa Barbara men's volleyball team claimed its fifth victim in its last six matches, topping No. 9 Stanford in five games thanks to Evan Patak's modern day record 48 kills. The win propels the Gauchos to 5-1 in MPSF play as they conclude their first road trip of the season with a perfect 2-0 record, lifting UCSB to above .500 for the first time this season at 5-4 overall.
The Cardinal jumped out to claim one 30-23, but Santa Barbara responded by evening the match at 1-1, taking game two 30-24. In what proved to be the theme of the night Stanford came back to win game three 30-28, but you guessed it, UCSB bounced back once again, tying up the match with a 30-24 win in game four.
The decisive game five resembled games one through four, close and tight, as is went into extra-points, but the Gauchos were determined to complete the weekend sweep and took match with a 18-16 game five victory. Patak 48 kills were a career-high as he hit an outstanding .527, he also added four service aces and eight digs. In Santa Barbara's weekend wins over Pacific and Stanford, he combined for 71 kills in nine games, an average of 8.8 kills per game.
Theo Brunner, Bryan Berman and Nate Wack each added seven kills for UCSB, and Michael Kennedy had six kills and three total blocks, but it was Patak who the Cardinal had absolutely no answer for.
"Our guys are playing really hard, but in order to be successful in the MPSF we have to eliminate mistakes, and find a way to shut down other teams' big hitters," said Stanford head coach Don Shaw in reference to Patak's performance.
As a team, UCSB hit a season-high .348, including a sizzling .455 in the deciding fifth game. The Cardinal hit .277 for the match and they were paced by Craig Buell who had 16 kills.
Santa Barbara returns to action on Wednesday, February 2, when it travels to UC Irvine in another MPSF match scheduled for 7:00 p.m. The Gauchos return home on Friday, February 4, to host UCLA at 7:00 p.m. in Robertson Gymnasium.

No, really, you think so, Don? I mean, sheesh, what gave that away? The fact that he had 74 swings on the ball and no other Gaucho had more than 1/3 of that? Everybody thought Shaw was gonna be great after Nieves resigned and he came over from the women's program. Nobody realized he was gonna dial it in and hit cruise control once he got there. The Don Shaw of today isn't the same one that led the Cardinal Women to all those championships.
