I noticed you can change the amount of days that the posts are saved here, but it doesn't let you keep them forever. So, my question is, how many days should Roger leave the messages up on this board?
I didn't like the mass deletions on the old VBall 24/7, I understand the point, but didn't like the method. Will that sort of thing happen here? Or will he set the posts to be removed after 20 days? 30? 60?
What do you all think?

Call me a cynic but I don't see anyone going farther back than a week at the most. I personally don't read past page 2 which is just a day or two old.

Am I allowed to vote, since I am the moderator. That's almost like rigging the vote, isn't it?
So, I picked 20 days (the default). It seemed reasonable to me. But I will abide by whatever you folks want.
p.s. I know some of you didn't like what I did with VB 24/7 and the mass deletions of those posts. I had to make a point. My feeling is, I think a lot of people saw the posts I deleted already so it's not like I deleted something nobody saw.
As for this board, I will only delete the troll posts (which I catch, because I don't read everything) and the ones that make everyone violently ill. I don't do mass deletions. I think everyone already knows how I go about my job -- peak in once in a while, delete the undesirables (those are few and far between btw), and then go about my business as if I was never here. I think that's the way the moderator should be. I don't believe in being the all-pervasive GOD and control freak. I come in here, do my thing, and then leave. I let posters do whatever they want and however creatively they want to do it. Have fun, that's my motto.

I think more than 10 days is excessive and unnecessary.

Hi, I made this a "sticky" so that it will always stay on top. Only for a few more days.
I am leaning toward 20 days, but I will follow whatever you vote.

Not to be intentionally contrarian here, but I'm used to boards where posts are up for quite some time, often many months. I myself have gone back months looking for old posts, lists, articles, etc. where a topic resurfaces every so often. If it's not too much trouble I'd like to see them stay for at least a month. IMO

I personally am in favor of keeping a MUCH longer than 22 days record on here. My reasoning is, what's it going to hurt? I don't see it becoming any more of a maintenance nightmare (as the people that run the server do the maintenance). Unless they start squeaking that this board is getting too big (which I doubt), then what is the reason to get rid of the old posts? There is a very nice "Search" feature on this board that scrolls through the posts in the past, which could be a useful tool, if someone wanted to find older information. As far as the argument that "I don't read the old posts anyways" well, yeah, so don't read them. But, why get rid of the power of the search feature by removing all the data? I say, the limit set is 999 days, use it. See JUST how popular this board can be, and become over the years. I think it would be fun to see what someone's opinion was 4 months ago, say, if their team started to lose and they start badmouthing it, after promoting it. Looking up stats and opinions about different situations. This is all good data. I say, keep it, so some of us can use it. That's the thought of a database and systems administrator. I'd like to hear more opinions convincing me otherwise (even though I have no final say, I feel I do have some expertise to provide information to the decision-makers).

I think a couple of weeks might actually be good. My one complaint: is there any way to speed up this board? The loading time seems much slower than the 24/7 board. Maybe a shorter archive would help?

TEXT If I get to vote, I would prefer to archive the posts longer than 20 days. I sometimes don't post or check the posts for a couple of weeks. It's not that I am not interested but I run into blocks of time that are unmanageable and need to play catch up. During the womens's season, it seems like there are posters every five minutes! ARGH!

Maybe a shorter archive would help? The archive length shouldn't matter to the board speed. It is written using a script which is based on the processor speed of the server. The number of posts really isn't that critical to the speed of the board, most likely its the amount of users on at one time, or if you have some ad restrictions or some other software slowing it down. Part of it is the board in general anyways.

I was kind of hoping that the threads for the college women for instance would all stay on the site til the end of their season.

I would like to see the posts stay up for a long time now. 6 months would suit me. There are many good posts on important topics. There are long time topics where good opinions are shared. The Title IX issue is one that often comes up after long hiatuses, for example. Fab 50 lists, All American lists, season records, and many other factutal posts can be found and and re-discussed.
Also, is there ANYTHING that can be done to speed up this server. I'm on a T-1 and it's slowwwww.
I'm beginning to like this board. But the posts don't change color once you've visited them, and I'd like to see you be able to have set your personal preferences to extend the strings so you can see all the replies if you want, just like we used to enjoy on the old board.

Roger can set the colors up so the posts change color in the settings. I suppose we'll have to have a poll to see if he'll do that.

I got all the info I needed. I will keep all the posts up as long as I can, perhaps even 4 months or longer.
I have removed this thread from "sticky" status.
