I've looked in a number of places and I can't find any explanation of how they determine the 16 teams that advance from the 6 pools into the elimination rounds. I also couldn't find any explanation of the so-called Lucky Loser matches. The FIVB site has a 68-page PDF press release about Olympic beach volleyball, and it didn't even seem to be in there! If the TV announcers have mentioned it, I managed to miss that too.
Can anyone explain how this works? Thanks.

Top 2 from each pool with the top 4 3rd place teams. Still looking for the tiebreaker info, but I'd guess it would be by points pct since that is the current FIVB practice.

I found the answer today at nbcolympics.com. It was kind of buried in the site, so I didn't find it initially. It works like this:
1) The top two teams from each of the six pools get into the playoffs, giving us the first 12 qualifiers.
2) The top two teams among the 6 third-place finishers also qualify, now giving us 14.
3) The remaining 4 third-place finishers play off in the two "Lucky Loser" matches, with the winners becoming the final two qualifiers.
They also listed the tie-breaker procedures, which involve various calculations based first on matches, then on games (sets), and then on points.
