I have a question about the roster size...this might have been addressed before but I jus missed it...why didn't they up the amount of players on the roster to 14 now that there are technically seven starters?

I would assume it's because there's no back up libero in most situations. The men's team didn't even bring a spare or anyone that could take the spot. I guess since there aren't very many situations in which a libero can get injured nobody brings a spare so they didn't feel the need to up the roster number. Just my guess

As I understand it international rosters will expand to 14 starting with the first major international competition after the Olympics. The idea is to have two liberos; whether you have to declare two as liberos I don't know. I think so.

I think so. if this is the case, why have they waited so long to expand the rosters? didn't they have the libero position at the last olympics?

So if the rosters are going to expand to 14 after the games, which two U.S. players got shortchanged in Beijing?*

After the Olympics FIVB rosters will expand to 14 players with mandatory 2 liberi. Only one libero will be allowed on the court at a time.
The FIVB is not entirely in charge of the roster size. The IOC gives volleyball a certain number of beds in the Olympic village. Until the IOC gave the FIVB more beds (something they are not very willing to do) the FIVB was locked into 12.

On an unrelated note, it appears to me that Touzinsky can pass and play "D" on an international level, but his offense may be suspect....is he destined to be a libero? or is he not good enough for that.
My opinion is that half the reason he's serving is his upgraded defense in comparision to the middle he replaces.....

I believe it's so that they can have a powerful jump serve if the other side is easily passing Millar or Lee's jump float. He does seem to be playing better defense, but I can't see him becoming a libero. I honestly think they would keep Priddy hitting and have Salmon as the libero just to keep Priddy's offense in. Riley's really good, but of the two you'd want to lose you'd have to pick him because Priddy's just too dang good.
