In general, Kevin Barnett has done a good job covering men's volleyball. Dare I say great. Except: During the Japan/China match in Beijing, he did not fully explain the rules regarding attacking the ball when it was over the net. The Japanese setter ( I think Kosuke) dumped the ball with his right hand to the zone 4 area. He hit it behind him. He was called for illegal attack because his hand was over the net. The hand signal was "reaching beyond the net". The ball was 50/50 and the official saw the hand make initial contact over the Chinese court. The official made the right call and both Sunderland and Barnett couldn't understand why it was a violation. They were both addressing that the setter was front row (it doesn't matter). Barnett did this in the World League also. 13.3.1 A player hits the ball within the playing space of the opposing team. Yes, you can hit a ball that is 50/50. No, that isn't the only rule to consider to make the play legal. The Japanese setter, for example, couldn't have reached over the Chinese court and set the ball back into the Japanese court. Initiating contact with the ball over the opponents court (blocking excluded) is a violation.

The entire ball. Which should be the same as any part of the hand.

Having only heard Karch and what's her name commentate the men's final four until now, hearing Barnett and Sunderland's commentary is absolutely AMAZING.

I'm just happy it's not Heather Cox.

The entire ball. Which should be the same as any part of the hand. You mean to simplify the call? Probably a good idea.

Sunderland and Barnett do a great job.
they could use a little polish....in the world league final, libero sets the setter who dumps, ref makes the right call, and they don't explain it correctly---they say it was a lift.
but, its a joy to listen to them (and painful to listen to the beach guys!)

Amen, and they have improved since their coverage of the World Grand Prix on UHD (Vball in high-def is a beautiful thing!). Of course, it helps to be on site and live when you're doing the call.

As opposed to on site and dead, which doesn't help much at all.

Is it me or has Barnett's voice been getting higher every broadcast? Is he going through reverse puberty?
Gotta say though that they are doing a GREAT JOB.

I'm guessing it's you. But ask someone who can hear you. They should be able to let you know.

What I like about Barnett and Kiraly is that not only do they possess credibility being former national team players themselves, but they have RECENTLY competed at the highest international level which to me makes all the difference in the world. The game changes and there are a lot of little nuances that I think sometimes other commentators overlook. Kevin Barnett has played with and against a lot of the current international players and gives you a very personal and in-depth description and analysis of their play and their roles. Same goes for Kiraly and the beach game.

I like that they call it how they see it. No boosterism or euphemisms. I'm not tuning in to get USAV propaganda of how Our Glorious Country's Heart-Filled Performance Somehow Falls To The Slick, Sneaky Enemy. I want to hear, "...another bad pass", and "that set is way too tight for Glass to do anything".
