As good as Brazil has looked in this tournament the real test will be if they go up against Cuba. There is a HUGE amount of history between these two teams and Brazil is really the one that has the pressure on them to prove that they can FINALLY beat the Cubans in a big match.

Are the quarterfinals single elimination? I'm sure someone more knowledgeable than I am have answered your question. Yes, it is single elimination. Not a double-elimination format. Just wondering, in years past Olympic competition there use to be a 5th-8th place play-offs in men's and women's tournament. Why did the Olympic organizing committe or FIVB did away with it four years ago? Were those play-offs meaningless and a waste of time?

Are the quarterfinals single elimination? Yes, the quarterfinals are single-elimination. The losers go home. The four winners then advance to the semifinals which are double-elimination, sort of. QuarterfinalsMATCH1: Brazil v Japan MATCH2: China v Russia MATCH3: Italy v USA MATCH4: Cuba v Serbia SemifinalsMATCH5: Winner of M1 v winner of M2 MATCH6: Winner of M3 v winner of M4 Medal RoundMATCH7: Winner of M5 v winner of M6. MATCH8: Loser of M5 v loser of M6 ResultsGOLD = Winner of M7 SILVER = Loser of M7 BRONZE = Winner of M8 TEARS AND FINGER POINTING = Loser of M8

Sunderland told a story about how the representative players from Cuba and Brasil got into a fist fight after a FIVB match, during the press conference.

My Prediction:
Quarterfinals MATCH1: Brazil 3 - 0 Japan MATCH2: China 2 - 3 Russia MATCH3: Italy 2 - 3 USA MATCH4: Cuba 3 - 1 Serbia
Semifinals MATCH5: Brazil 3 - 1 Russia MATCH6: Cuba 2 - USA 3 (but Cuba scores more total points)
Medal Round MATCH7: Brazil 3 - 0 USA MATCH8: Cuba 3 - 2 Russia
Results GOLD = Brazil SILVER = USA BRONZE = Cuba TEARS AND FINGER POINTING = Tenniscraze
Okay, maybe more fantasy than prediction, but whatever.

In 1996 grand prix... Regla Torres chasing Marcia around the court fist ready to punch. haha

Not sure if this was what he was talking about.
I forgot they were still wearing bun huggers back then, whoa! I have always liked the long sleeve jerseys though.

1996 Atlanta Olympics there was a scuffle and 1996 Grand Prix Regla Torres was running around the court like a crazed dog. They have the videos on YouTube.

I knew the "luck" of the draw will favor China, this is disgusting. Italy is a much tougher opponent than Russia and the slow offense they are playing right now will suit Team USA. I read a chinese newspaper that reported Lang Ping received a huge backlash after USA defeated China, some question if she had forgotten she is Chinese? whatever

Omg, China drew Russia? This is nuts... More draw rigging, China?

Don't worry, China/Russia were at their peak in 2004, they were able to hang on for a year or two, but all sports programs go through cycles. I don't think either one will get a medal. This battle between two heavily injured/aging depleted squads will in retrospect come to be seen as heralding the end of an era.

Its a great move for China on many planes. First, the competition is probably easier. Second, the Chinese Olympic marketing committee can promote this as a rematch of Athens 2004...stirring up more national fervor for what has been so far a disappointing performance for their beloved team.

And the Best Woman Player of the Twentieth Century still went to Regla Torres. Some questioned if the award should have gone to Luis/Carvajal. Torres is not even the best middle ever from Cuba. Carvajal is. In my opinion, they are the best middles of all times
