After watching (and playing) in Saturday's Marquette tournament, it's going to be an exciting year in the WVC and around the midwest. Lakeland was without Jared (MB) and Matt (OH), but sources say Jared will be back. Even without the two of them, they are going to be a good team, especially with a great freshman libero. One thrilling moment of the day was in the semifinals when Missouri was up 10-5 in the third game and Lakeland worked their way back to win 16-14.
Marquette played solid all day, and like it was said earlier in this forum, they did lose two middles, but the two new middles they have, a freshman and a sophomore, are solid and run a mix of plays. UW-Whitewater returns most of their lineup from last year and should do better during season than their performance showed this weekend. UW-Lacrosse ran into a very tough College of DuPage (NIRSA Div. III Champions last year) and had Lakeland in their pool, so they were not able to finish Top Two and go on to gold. However, even without WVC MVP Charlie Veldre, the team looked solid and has a lot of potential.
Missouri is one or two players away from being a dominating team. With a mix of players, some from St. Louis High Performance and other experience players, this could be one heck of a team. It's always interesting though to see what Missouri brings to Nationals.
That being said, Marquette, Lakeland, Whitewater, LaCrosse and Oshkosh (not at tournament) are all talented, but one may not be standing out head and shoulders above the rest anymore like in past years in the WVC. It should be fun.
Other observations: The Turtles (Mostly made of Clarke College NAIA players) have some new talent and run the fastest offense of any team out there. Everything was a shoot to the outside or right side, driving middle blockers from opposing teams crazy. UW-Platteville has some strong hitters and is working with a new setter, but at the NIRSA Div. II level they have potential to be Top 10 again. UW-Milwaukee is the same as in past years, and they brought two squads to the tournment, which shows they have the numbers at that school, but they are still looking for one solid team. Good luck to everyone this year.

There should be some good teams on the west coast this year as well. Club volleyball in the west, as well as a whole, has gotten much better just in the past couple years I think. Usually the first pre-season tournament for us is early november sometime.
But a few teams that could be good (DI or DII) are: Cal, SF state, santa clara, st. mary's, cal poly....

Anyone know what the pools are going to look like at the infamous Iowa tourney this weekend?
Any predictions?

How's the rest of the Big10 looking? Michigan State add some bombers? Illinois some more SPRI kids?
Midwest 10? Did Oshkosh/Lakeland go out and recruit some more big-timers? Notre Dame still the epitome of mediocrity?

Illinois has another solid team. Lost the taller setter from last year, but still have Doug and another taller setter who is probably playing front row for Doug. Oshkosh will lose Erickson but were without him a lot of last year with team issues I guess. They get back an OH that was a freshman when they beat Lakeland in the National Championship. Libero Aaron is still there and I think the freshman from last year who tore his ACL at marquette is back. Lakeland fell a couple of times during this years marquette tourney, but had really good come backs thanks to a number of great plays. Like it was mentioned before, they went down in the Mizzou game and came back, but the game before they played Milwaukee and were down 18-24 and came back to win. Don't know about Michigan State or even if Ohio State is any good because there wern't many top teams at their tourney they won.

Heard from several people that Nate Cedarberg plans to set cause of the frustration they had going back and forth between setters last year. That would definitely affect the teams ball control...no more two man passes with him and Wayne. But they still have a lot of talent so could be a dangerous team.
Lakeland is a solid team and will only get better as the year goes on but took a major hit losing Jared and Martin. Like it was said before, they are not a team that stands out way above the rest without those two players.
Will know more about IL after the Iowa tourney this weekend...

I know midwest and west teams might not give much respect to the east but we have the 2nd Annual Derrick Beckner Memorial tournament this weekend at JMU. This 28 team tournament is probably the biggest ever held on the east coast for Club ball. JMU, Va Tech, & Penn State (arguably the three best teams in the east, minus Buffalo) will all be there along with UPENN, Delaware, and Messiah giving the tournament a pretty high competition level for us on the east coast scene. James Madison will be looking to avenge a couple of early loses to Va. Tech at Techs home tournament a few weekends ago. After going 5-1 against Tech last year I think this was a wake up call for the Dukes. This tournament should show who will be the dominant forces in the east and should be pretty exciting.
