My co-worker is looking for a place to stay in Maui. He is going with his Mom, so he needs 2 beds, but nothing lavish (in June.) Any recommendations? He found one place that was marked as so-so in the travel books, but they claim it is newly refurbished. I was hoping one of the many Hawaii fans here (Wolfgang?) would be willing to give some opinions. I like it when he goes to Hawaii, because I get to see great pictures. He said they got a phenomenal deal on airline tickets, if any of you have been thinking of vacations and don't hate to fly!

My opinion? I'm not very opinionated (am very meek, actually) so I don't have a lot of opinions to dispense. However, your mention of Maui is interesting. Unlike most tourists, I never really liked Maui that much. Well, if you like great beaches, I guess Maui is great. But I personally can't take the sand-n-surf 24/7, if ya know what I mean. When I was there, I stayed in Kihei at a hotel that's near a trail that leads up to a luxury resort where all the Hollywood celebs frequent. I forgot all the names to these hotels because, as I said, I don't really like Maui that much and it's been awhile since I was there. Also, not many great places to eat. Maaaaan, we struggled to find decent food.
Your best bet is to get the advice from the more seasoned locals on this forum.

I'm originally from Maui and it's the most popular of the Hawaiian Islands for tourist....Maui No Ka Oi. Right now the economic situation has left the place practically empty a great time to visit. As for lodging options include private homes, condos, resort hotels and Bed & Breakfasts. While the hotels will hold their price line for a long time when things get rough the condo owners are the first to offer deals in times like this. I don't get involved with tourist stuff but I''ll give you the name of a lady on Maui who has a great reputation with mainlanders in assisting them with finding their needs or you can simply google condo rentals on Maui and find owners who rent.Renting condos can be tricky because it's sight unseen but using someone like Kay helps with that problem. www.mauikay.com/index.html

Maui Tyler Moore
We stayed at the Kaanapali Beach Hotel both times we were there, and liked it, but I have nothing to compare it to.

Is there any other Maui besides Hawaii's? Wikipedia has several articles using "Maui" in disambiguation. One happens to be the Māori name for New Zealand's "North Island".

We don't really want to hear about you walking out waist deep and bending over. Nor the amazement which followed.

Keeping his Mom entertained is the key to enjoying any destination. The answer to "where" is "what," as in "what d'you wanna do?" Golf? Kaanapali or Wailea or even Kihei, with a car. Kapalua is pretty "Ritzy." Sit on a beach? Wailea, or even better - drive to the end of the road past Makena, huge gorgeous beach, best on a weekday. Sitting at a hotel pool? Kaanapali (or anywhere for that matter.) Boating/Diving - Lahaina. Bicycling - depends on intensity. I left out shopping, because who travels to visit a mall? Mom?
We like Paia (like going back 50 years). Mom might be bored, or worse - pissed that she still has to cook and do dishes! One more restaurant is not what I crave on vacation. Give me a burger, a beer, and a good sunset and I'm cool. Seriously, dude.

Try vrbo.com (vacation rentals by owner) We've had good luck with them in the US and Europe.

EVEN I leave my golf clubs at home... No bowling either. You go vacation to see and do stuff you might not do otherwise. Maybe bend over? No we wont go there . What about LAVA flows ...sunsets...and my personal favorite which endeared me to the natives... A Fire on the beach at dusk, sharing food and drink with others ? Vacation is what we make it... I still picture granny on the roof top ..and German beer dudes chasing CHEVY on his vacations.

Napili is way up on the west side of Maui it's pretty quite up there.I don't know much about the Mauian except where it is, nice little beach with views of Molokai.
