yea, I know. Red Shirt. This comes from the American Football term to put a Red practive Jersey on the Quarter back so you don't tacklet/hit him. Then it came to mean sitting out one season out of 5 in college to mature the player or have him recover from an injury/personal problems...(or let him sit out a year if he transferred schools).
I'm speaking about specific posted to the web NCAA Roster's for Men's Volleyball.
When did ithe Term RS change meaning from Inactive to Active but in the second year of the program at that grade level? (see UCLA for example). About the same time a volleyball game became a {tennis} set? What does a RS SR mean? It doesn't mean he sat out the first year of his Senior year. (see Loyola for example).
I know what a 5th (or 7th....) year Senior is.....but not what a RS JR who played last year and this year in his 3rd /4th Academic year in college is....
Thanks for giving me a clue!

a RS Jr. is in his 4th year of school but his 3rd. year of eligibility. It doesn't necessarily mean he redshirted his freshman year though. It just means one of the years he was in school he didn't compete and one of his 4 years of eligibility was not used up.
RS freshman - second year in college, first year playing

Thanks!
I was stuck in the Red Shirt mean's not playing Inactive sense of the term.
So a RS SR is in his 5th year of school, 4th year of playing.....and could have sat out any of the prior years.
So if the designation RS means sat out one season, Why isn't a RS FR an RS SO ....he is in his second year of playing, and they are a Sophomore in College academically (an RS SO?).....

Just think of that class designation after RS as the playing year and not the academic year.
