While I'm a firm believer in conservation and the pursuit of more efficient/sustainable energy policy, I'm also surprisingly (to myself) unmoved by the anthropogenic global warming catastrophe rhetoric. It's probably because I see precious little in human beings that is worthy of saving. If the Seven Bowls are poured out and our world is plunged into darkness and torment, it will merely be the fulfillment of the end our species has been rushing towards from the moment we stepped out of the Garden. We are nothing more than strange quirks orbiting a speck of dust being blown across the floor of Creation. Only our monstrous collective self-centredness keeps us from killing ourselves in despair at our insignificance. As seen from the infinite rest of the Universe, the environmental upheavals of Jove are far more beautiful than anything Earth has to offer. In the present moment, of course, it is sad to think of our future global demise, but if a species goes extinct on a planet and no sentient beings are left alive to grieve, did the cataclysm make a sound? That's why I worry about religious nutjobs. They actually want the World to end to fulfill prophesy.
