We're pretty excited down here in Dallas because Pepperdine and BYU are going to play each other on October 28 and 29. It's the first-ever NCAA D-I men's match to be played in Texas, so it will give some much needed exposure to the great men's game down here. Not to mention it's cool to have the first D-I match in Texas be between the past two National Champions. It'll give us a glimpse at how good these two teams will be for the upcoming season. There's a website set-up to find out about the game. If you live in the Dallas/Ft. Worth area, you definitely do not want to miss this. Tickets are cheap and you can buy them at the door. mensvolleyball.hynesco.com

Are there any teams down there who are considering joining the D-1 VB ranks? And, can you fill us in as to why this tournament is being held in Dallas? Thanks.

There are several D-I schools here in Texas that have club men's volleyball programs (Texas, Texas A&M, etc). But as of now, there are no plans for any of them to make the jump from club competition to NCAA competition. It's sad because those schools have the resources to fund a NCAA men's program without violating Title IX, but they just choose not to do it. I think it goes back to the fact that football is king in Texas and the thought of NCAA men's volleyball being played by Texas schools is foreign to many.
The reason why these teams are playing in Dallas is there are a couple of us involved in Dallas-area volleyball who have ties to the BYU and Pepperdine programs. We arranged to have them come down here to play some of their fall competition dates. We're very happy that Coach Dunphy and Coach Peterson agreed to come down here.
As part of the weekend, the coaches and players from both teams are also doing a skills clinic for local area youth players. It's really going to be a great weekend because the teams are so willing do use their appearance in Texas to help promote the game of volleyball, and especially boys/mens volleyball.

Keep us informed. It is interesting, as the rest of us think of ways to promote mens VB, you guys are already doing it. Very impressive. I know that Pavlik and Speraw are ambassadors and play some games to promote, anyone else?

I hope you're able to promote it well so you get a "turn-away" crowd. What's the capacity of the gym, and where is it going to be held? Are the Dallas FW papers getting releases and calls to cover it? Do all the high schools know of it? Thanks.

The matches are being played at UT-Dallas and the gym capacity is roughly 2,500. You hit it on the head when you said we are hoping for a "turn-away" crowd. As much as we want everyone to see the matches, it would be great to sell out both nights. That is one of the reasons why we elected to go with the smaller venue--along with cutting costs, we thought it would be better to play in front of an almost packed house, rather than in a nice big facility that is only 1/4 full.
We have sent out several press releases and are using our connections with different media outlets to get this covered. We have also been doing extensive marketing among the high schools, JO clubs, alumni chapters, and volleyball community for about 4 months. We've done everything we can think of to get the word out.
While companies have been understandably cautious about sponsoring the event with cash, a number of companies have shown their support for what we're doing by providing products as part of a sponsorship, most notably Kaepa. We have a commitment from BYU to make this an annual event, so if this is successful, we're confident we'll be able to attract more sponsors next year and hopefully provide free tickets.

Sounds like you have most of the bases covered. Don't underestimate the human interest appeal to the TV stations. The trick there is to try to get them to do a story the night before, not after. Good luck.

Yep Mac, you're right. The one angle we're taking is going after the local morning news shows to see if they would do a live shot at the gym playing volleyball with some of the players on Friday. So we'll see how it goes.

Hey TX ,good job ! ! We need more of this around the country to promote the game. Most D-1 teams have limited travel budgets ,so adding the clinic is also a good way for coaches to get paid on trips also. UCLA is probably the only D-1 school with unlimited funds , so it is great to see this effort on your part.

Actually, this is not costing the schools anything for them to play here. Because their travel budgets are so limited, the way we were able to have them come here to play is if we covered their travel expenses. The teams agreed to do the clinic for free to help us cover the teams' travel expenses, which was gracious of them to do.
So there is a bit of a financial risk/investment, but it should be well worth it. With the clinic plus ticket sales, we'll hopefully be able to cover the teams' expenses. Our hope is that is goes well this year so we'll be able to sell sponsorships next year and give away a lot of free tickets. We just weren't able to to do that this time around because companies here in Dallas were understandably cautious about sponsoring the first-time matches with cash.
If anyone out there is interested in doing this same type of thing in their area, I'd be happy to share our experience and planning with you.

Why wasn't this repeated in '06?

Why wasn't this repeated in '06? My guess is that it's probably due to the fact that it didn't make as much of an impact as was originallly hoped...... Funding also may have played a significant role...

Great way to promote the sport to an area where BOYS volleyball is begining to grow. There are some great programs in TX right now and doing this just helps to promote them. Also, showcase the fact that men's volleyball is sell-able product, especially by having two of the best programs in the MPSF playing head up in a major media market, like Dallas. Great job to those of you in the Dallas-Fort Worth area, on the execution of this idea. Let's hope those BIG NAME schools in the Big12 and the SEC like what they see.
