This is my first year reffing high school volleyball and let me tell you it's not an easy job. I have played the game for years, but until you get that whistle around you're neck, you will never understand what we go through.
One thing I say to the girls is "If you play the perfect game, I will call the perfect game"
As officials we will not see every play that fans "think" they see - its impossible - we do the best we can.

This story is a little different: I'm usually a loud obnoxious student at volleyball matches. I'll heckle the other team's coaches and players and also, when given a prime opportunity, I'll heckle officials for a bad call. Last spring we had a tournament with a bunch of different Florida teams. Because it was a spring match and a laid back atmosphere, I spent the majority of the matches talking to other fans instead of watching the match and cheering. Another fan by me didn't agree with a call and simply said "bad call ref! how'd you get this job?" The official then switched with one from the other court and the new one cam over to ME and my friends (not the fan who had made the comment) and told us that if we said one more word we would be forced to leave. Now, that's bad officiating. I would have retorted "I found this whistle in a Cracker Jack box and just got up here on the stand. If you want it, we can trade places." ;D

I have officiated and coached both in Nebraska, HS and club. The over all HS officiating in the state of Nebraska is horrible. The athletes and game have passed by the officials which is really sad. There are some exceptions to the rule of course but they are few and far between the typical pair that walk in the door every evening.

I attended the St. Louise and RI match last wknd, and the ref was very generous with his calls. He might have about 5 double contacts on SLU'S setter and a few on RI. It seemed to me that some of the refs are now more flexible with sets. Are we heading into the right direction? Or maybe it's just me as a setter with solid hands and expects setters at this level to be much much more polished. In case you weren't aware, for the 2008 season the NCAA issued a "Ball Handling Directive" to officials that loosened double-hit calls for setting. You can read it at: web1.ncaa.org/web_files/rules/wvolleyball/2008/Summaryofchanges-final_post-PROP.pdfThe relevant part starts at the top of page 3.

but I'm sorry there is no such thing as different brands of refs! So your argument makes no sense what so ever! wait.. there is different brands of refs! you have the old refs, the blind refs, the fat refs, the over-officious refs, the stubborn refs, and the selfish refs... oh but wait again! in hawai'i you mostly have all of these characteristics in the same package! so i guess kologekeiki is right, there is no such thing as brand refs.. at least the ones that come from Hawai'i. You would think in 30 years Hawaii would get a numerous amount of new officials, and yet region referee developmental person at USAV has been pushing regions to get new officials.. something is going wrong here. considering Hawaii is one of the volleyball capitals in the world. Wayne and Patricia are like CULT Leaders. But between the two we all know Patricia is wearing the pants and Wayne follows. You know it, I know it, the whole volleyball community of the island of Oahu knows it EVEN in the big island when the Haili Tournament takes place! FYI: i play, i coach, i ref,and i direct tournaments, I have been there and done that... and being nationally certified does not mean anything... it is just PROTOCOL you are being evaluated for. Either that or its who you know or who you can pucker up to to get your national certification, I know because I have been there. From my updated info referees get paid less than $30 a match and less than $8 a USAV match ONLY FOR REGIONALS. For international referee candidates there are age limits in order to even be considered, I believe there should be age limits for National officials here domestically. Word of advise for prospective national officials... If you live in a area with a small population or where there are hardly any volleyball around you, and theres no difference in payrates, don't waste your time. However, if your pay is determined by your certification status like in SoCal, by all means go for it! Go get your national patch! At least its worth something!

I would have retorted "I found this whistle in a Cracker Jack box and just got up here on the stand. If you want it, we can trade places." ;D HAHAHAHA! Since I coach I have a whistle in my bag. At one match I was drunk out of my mind and it was quite obvious that the referee wanted to get the match over with, with his quick whistles and being tight against one team and not the other. Long story short. During a delay due to a scorekeeping error the arena was close to silent, I get up , take my whistle out and yell out "hey ref! I got a whistle! I can finish the match for you I think i should too cuz I'll do a better job drunk!"crowd goes nuts and people started to bow down to me! memorable moments.. even the line judge was trying to hold his laughter but failed miserably :-D

I think that if you watch enough volleyball you are going to see almost everything that can be seen as far as calls go. I think the example of a bad or a missed call costing someone a set or match that they should have won are not such a common thing. It is hard to ref any sport, much less a sport that moves a fast as VB does. The only complaint that I have is that as time goes by certain refs may decide that it becomes important to insert their influence into a match. Refs should be like offensive lineman in football, if they do their job well you never notice that they are there. For the most part I think this is true. The example of the down ref missing the net-grab and over the line, if he(she) was looking elsewhere, checking the 10 ft line on a backrow attack, watching the because they thought the linesman may have been blocked, who knows?

A few years ago I brought fake yellow and red cards to a soccer game and it was pretty funny.

Great Halloween idea too!! dress up as a ref and just mimic or mock the real referees have you ever seen those "BULL S*** FLAGS" fans use at football games? and they throw it on the field if a bad penalty flag is is thrown? I find those hilarious!

Last week I was doing lines and the ref made a bad call (overruling me, without asking, on a ball four feet in front of me, but that is beside the point). A few minutes after that I thought he made a mistake the other way. At the next time out I went over a stood by the ref like we are supposed to do and we usually talk over some of the calls. I told him, "You know I was right." and he replied, with a big grin on his face, "Yeah, why do you think I made the second call?" p.s. Whenever a ref does a really good job, I make sure I let them know I thought that. wow... it really sucks too when you as a line judge is actually paying close attention and try your best just to be overruled especially in that obvious case. some refs just let their ego ruin everything

Wow I don't know what to say about this...you being a coach and going to a match "drunk out of your mind"? sorry but that looks pretty bad on your part! sorry Mr. "code of ethics Worshiper". I'm just an ordinary person, who enjoys a social life, I play the role only in the environment in which I hold that title. In a game in which I get complimentary tickets for to be a SPECTATOR, I hold the title of a SPECTATOR. If you are a lawyer, would you go to a club with your friends and present yourself as a lawyer while you are there? or even look for lawsuits? or be professional? you gotta be a loser. If you are a referee, would you go all over the place being Mr. Referee. (i know a few guys that are like that) if this is a question of professionalism? we live in hawaii, theres no such thing! heck look at your mayor mufi! he has been seen drunk out of his mind, does anyone care? NO! you see high school/ and other college coaches drunk out of their minds... does anyone care? NO.. do they care? NO. Referees after a match you spot them at a bar/restaurant with 5 empty bottles in front of them, do they care NO! do we care? NO I have seen one referee get kicked out of the Stan Sheriff Center.. Does he care? doubt it because he comes in more drunker everytime. Does anyone else care? NO, he makes more friends! if a referee comes into a arena to work drunk thats a different story, or a coach shows up to his/her match/practices drunk, thats also a different story. But in a social atmosphere, who really cares.. only the low-life jealous people, and the old dinosaurs. But look at their lives... nothing special about theirs. I would like to personally invite you to come tonight to Hawaiian Brians free pupus till 9pm... maybe instead of staying on a computer all day and nite.. come by and have fun and not be professional! and if you do come you'll know exactly who I am. Everyone else in hawaii is invited too! Free pupus till 9pm. Drink specials all nite and 80's jam music after 9pm. FREE COVER ALL NITE

you must fall into the old & fat category... figures why you never got the job in hawaii hahaha, pretty funny, actually i'm skinny and much younger. that would be a better reason why i wouldn't get the "job". I could imagine some one saying "I wasn't fat and old enough to be a referee, they said I have to bee over 200lbs and be larger than a size 40 pants size to even be considered"

FREE COVER ALL NITE I'm not saying that you can't go out and enjoy and have a social life (because heck i go out and drink myself)...because trust me I'm not trying to come down on you, because I am for one that says what you do on your personal time is your business...but I do it outside of the environment in which I work...but IMO it is jus not right going to a volleyball match, i'm assuming this is high school vball (sorry if I'm wrong), drunk where you are amongst your peers and possibly even some of your players, in front of possibly other school officials on school property... ANd the examples you site on here, is totally different because like how you said refs and coaches were at restaurant and bars drunk...that's fine because they are out not in the vicinities where they work and respected for the job they do there Sorry I would definitely take you up on your offer, but I actually don't live on O`ahu, I live on Maui...once again I apologize I don't mean to offend you because I think it's cool you have a social life and enjoy going out, because I do too, I jus wouldn't do it in an environment like that where there are people and officials that possibly would rat you out...
