As a former D1 volleyball player who once walked away from the game, my heart aches for Brook. The level at which they play and train affects every aspect of an athlete's life. It can be overwhelming. The desire to be a "normal" student is totally understandable. I have the utmost respect for the young women that can hack it at this level. It's something I couldn't do myself. Maybe that's why I am such a big fan. I am in awe of them as people as much as I am as players. I can't imagine that Hebert wouldn't release her. He has probably already signed the papers. My gut tells me that's not the issue here. I too noticed her lack of "sparkle" on the court. Especially this year. The love of the game has dwindled in her. I wish the team the best. I also wish Brook the best. It is just a game after all.

Maybe everyone should be going to the source instead of jumping to their own conclusions on why this happened. I am sure it is easy to "blame" Brook for all of this but have you ever wondered why someone who has always loved volleyball would just up and quit? Maybe everyone should quit blaming Brook and find out what the real reason is. Unfortuately you probably won't ever find out. Brook didn't let the team down....the team let Brook down.

By saying the team let her down and not the other way around you are contradicting your own point, of the real reason. Whatever happened it is between her and her teammates, and should remain there. You can't cry "she was thrown under the bus" and than proceed in throwing others under that same bus. Can't we just wish both sides well?

Will she still receive her athletic scholarship funds for spring semester at Minnesota? If not, it seems like a rather impulsive decision. Yes - scholarships are yearly; one cannot be granted a scholarship for only a semester. Not true on a few levels. But in this case, a scholarship can be pulled if the player is no longer on the team. In fact, she could even lose her scholarship for THIS semester if the school wanted to. (not saying that the school would or should do that, but it can be done.) 15.3.4 reduction and Cancellation during Period of award. (d) Voluntarily withdraws from a sport at any time for personal reasons; however, the recipient’s financial aid may not be awarded to another student-athlete in the academic term in which the aid was reduced or cancelled. A student-athlete’s request for written permission to contact another four-year collegiate institution regarding a possible transfer does not constitute a voluntary withdrawal. (Revised: 1/10/92, 1/11/94, 1/10/95, 1/9/96, 12/13/05)

I would like to remind posters that the same person posting under different usernames in the same thread for the purpose of stirring the pot is against forum rules -- _especially_ if that person has an affiliation with another program.
Thank you.

Threads like these should come with a dollar-ante betting pool on how many new accounts will be created just for posting in them.

I think its selfishness at work here. You are letting down your whole team, if there were issues, talk about them openly and dont be hush hush about it, or talk behind everybody's back. What good does that do for team chemistry. I do wish Brooke well, but I think the team is better off without the negativity surrounding pleasing #6.

This could not have been an easy decision knowing her personality and how much she loved playing. I am sure she had good reasons. Obviously, she felt that it was the right decision for her. Wish her well and hope that it was the right decision. I really hope she plays somewhere else....

This board is for discussion. With that comes speculation. Not all of us have the ability to go to Brook and say "hey what happened?" and it's ridiculous of you to suggest that we do that. Also, you're being quite contradictory here. You directly feed into the speculation of what happened - just one or two sentences after reprimanding us for doing such.

Maybe this also could force Love to play backrow? Huh? Do you think Love is next in line for back row action? Of all the players the Gophers have, I think Love is probably the last one who will play all the way around. Actually I heard that since this happened, Love and Tan are going to switch roles - Love will be libero, and Tan will be an outside hitter.

What exactly did the team do to Brook? I guess it's not okay to blame Brook, but okay to blame the other girls still playing on the team? Is that your point?

There's a ton of other things to do while in college besides hitting balls over the net every day.

Actually I heard that since this happened, Love and Tan are going to switch roles - Love will be libero, and Tan will be an outside hitter. I appreciate the sarcasm, but prior to the season and even during pre-season Gopher fans were pushing for Love to get backrow experience. I agree that she doesn't look at all ready for play back there, but it becomes an issue of subs. Wilson is by far the most likely player at that position and will probably stay in all the way around on the outside. But then that means that either Love or Harms would have to play all the way around or risk running out of subs if you go more than 3 cycles around the court. Most of the time it wouldn't be an issue, but in close games it could be. Harms would probably be the logical choice for playing all the way around, but I'm not sure how strong her backrow game would be vs. a DS sub.
