Beach Teams Named for World University Championships

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. (May 18, 2010) – USA Volleyball has announced the under-23 and under-26 Beach National Training Team, including the teams that will compete at the World University Championships on June 15-20 in Alanya, Turkey.
The men’s U-23 training team will include Maddison McKibbin (Honolulu, Hawaii), Tony Ciarelli (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Colten Echave (Ladera Ranch, Calif.), Chase Ross (Carlsbad, Calif.), Adam Cabbage (Rio Rancho, N.M.) and Andy McGuire (Manhattan Beach, Calif.).
Ciarelli and McKibbin have been chosen to represent the United States at the World University Championships while Ross and Cabbage are the alternates. Both Ciarelli and McKibbin just finished their sophomore seasons with USC. Ciarelli finished second at the 2008 FIVB Youth Beach World Championship with partner Jeff Carlson. McKibbin placed fifth at that same World Championship with Will Montgomery.
The women’s U-23 training team will consist of Kiah Fiers (Palos Verdes Estates, Calif.), Jazmin Machado (Encinitas, Calif.), Genie Francisco (Long Beach, Calif.), Ashley Lee (La Habra Heights, Calif.) and Caitlin Ledoux (Phelan, Calif.).
Ledoux and Machado will play at the World University Championships. Lee will be the alternate.
Ledoux just finished her sophomore indoor season at Long Beach State. She made it to the quarterfinals of the 2008 FIVB Youth World Championship with Tara Roenicke. Machado and partner Summer Ross finished tied for fifth at the 2009 FIVB Junior World Championship.
The men’s U-26 training team will include Shane Donohue (Freehold, N.J.), Mark Van Zwieten (Pompano Beach, Fla.), Avery Drost (Santa Monica, Calif.), Brandon McLaughlin (Huntington Beach, Calif.), Hudson Bates (Henrico, Va.) and Stafford Slick (Andover, Minn.).
Slick and Van Zwieten will play at the World University Championships. Donohue and Bates will be the alternates.
Van Zwieten won the bronze with partner Joey Dykstra at the 2008 World University Championship. He and Dykstra won silver at the 2005 FIVB Beach Youth World Championship. Slick won the bronze medal at the NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Chiapas.
The women’s U-26 team will consist of Lindsey Hirzel (Hermosa Beach, Calif.), Brooke Sweat (Estero, Fla.), Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas), Traci Weamer (Costa Mesa, Calif.), Emily Day (Torrance, Calif.) and Stephanie Scheele (Costa Mesa, Calif.).
Day and Moriarty will play in the World University Championship and Weamer is the alternate.
Day won a 2009 NORCECA Beach Circuit event in Jamaica with partner Claire Robertson. She finished fifth at a 2010 NORCECA event in Dominican Republic with partner Angelea McHenry. Moriarty finished second at the first 2010 USA Volleyball International Development Qualifier in Long Beach, Calif.
