Switzerland has always been a host country for US players. The most famous where called Logan Tom, Robyn Ah-Mow Santos or Rita Crockett. But many others, totally unknown, came to Switzerland just after their studies. However, all of them have left their mark on Swiss volleyball.
In a few months, a new season will begin. Many Swiss teams are trying to recruit US players by now. That’s exactly the topic that I would like to achieve.
If you heard of a US player moving to Switzerland, please let me know.

Courtney Thompson led Zeiler Koniz to the 2009 Swiss championship as the team’s starting setter.

Taylor Carico will be playing for VB Franches-Montagnes. Rachel Hartmann renewed for VBC Biel-Bienne. Mindi Wiley signed for Volley Köniz. Stephanie Lynch (Sagres Neuchâtel UC), Therese Crawford (VBC Voléro Zürich), Erin Waller (Sm’Aesch-Pfeffingen) and Kevin Wray (coach/VB Franches-Montagnes) are leaving Switzerland. I also heard that Emily Day might renew for VB Franches-Montagnes. No official announcement regarding Ellen Orchard (VC Kanti Schaffhausen).

VB Franches-Montagnes is certainly a study case. After having been shifted off to Division II at the end of the 2008/09 season, the team’s declared ambition was to resume immediately Division I. VB Franches-Montagnes used all authorized means to secure its come back in Division I for the 2010/11 season. In Switzerland, the number of foreign players is not limited*. The US colony, set up with Devon Sutherland, Kristin Kelley, Lauren DeTurk, Stephanie Cahill, Jessica Nyrop and Emily Day, achieved its ascent without any issue. Usually, the Division II has no professional players.
*However all Division I teams have signed a gentlemen’s agreement that stipulates the attendance of at least one Swiss player on the court.

Do you know what they get paid? I have no idea. But the salary cap in VB Franches-Montagnes must not be that high, anyway. Their global budget must not exceed CHF 300,000. NCAA players that are just starting a pro career have certainly a good price-performance ratio. To get well paid you need to go to Voléro Zurich (around CHF 900,000 budget) and have a name (Tom, Nnamani, Ah Mow, Roberts, Crawford, Weaver, Campbell).

Rachel Hartmann's someone for whom I've always found it easy to root.
(That's one helluva crumby sentence, but you get the idea. I hope.)

Switzerland is a beautiful country and I would choose it over most European countries to play in if I had a choice. It is clean and the train system is the best in Europe and, most important, lots of TALL good looking men reside there!
