Through the second day of the women's main draw, there are no significant upsets, which is actually a little unusual. Things are going to form as they finish pool and head to the single elimination bracket. The three US teams (Branagh/May, Akers/Turner & Kessy/Ross) are all undefeated and won their pools.
On the Men's side, Fuerbringer/Lucena barely squeaked through qualifying, winning a 3rd set 17-15. Then, they pull off a big upset in their main draw pool, beating Harley/Pedro of Brazil in 2!
Rogers/Dalhausser beat Jennings/Keenan in 3 in pool and Gibb/Rosenthal won their match in 3. The men's draw is a day behind the women's, so their pools will finish tomorrow.

So everyone knows, I'm just commenting on the results posted at the FIVB site. Maybe I'm just talking to myself.
On the women's side today, they only played the first round of the single elimination bracket between all the 2nd and 3rd-place finishers in the original pools (this is not a double-elimination tourney). The 9th and 10th seeds lost to lower seeds, but the top 8 are through to the second round by virtue of winning their pools. Tsiartsiani-Arvaniti of Greece beating the 10th seed is arguably not an upset. No American teams played.
Branagh/May-Treanor would play Kessy/Ross Sunday in the semifinals if they both win their next two matches. B/M-T would likely have to defeat Antonelli/Talita to get there. Akers/Turner have a pretty good draw, but would have to get through Xue/Xi to make the semis. There are no easy quarterfinal matches, so this is probably as good as it gets.
On the Men's side, Fuerbringer/Lucena continue with their inspired play with a convincing -13 -11 upset of 6th-seeded Klemperer/Koreng of Germany. They still have a final pool match remaining against the lowest seed. Hopefully, they can hold form to win the pool, though the Canadian pair also upset the Germans yesterday.
Gibb/Rosy expectedly finished 2nd in their pool to Emanuel/Alison, while Rogers/Beast and Jennings/Keenan both won out in their pool to finish 1st and 2nd.
There are still 6 pools waiting to finish, but only K/K of Germany look to be a high seed with problems qualifying.

Thanks for the updates. I read this board even if I don't respond... so keep up the good work, please. Seems screwed somehow that Jennings/Keenan have to be in the same pool as Dalhausser...

It's funny, I never saw Candelas (USC) as being much of a beach player, but each year she seems to improve and get better results playing for Mexico. I would love to see her play now.

I'm glad to hear that someone's reading I don't mind posting if I have the time. Being in the same pool isn't too bad since they only have to avoid last place. It's the random draw afterwards that makes a bigger difference. Fuerbringer/Lucena did win their pool, but got a crummy playoff draw. They get the bye into the second round, but would have to play Rogers/Dalhausser in the third if they both win out.

For the USA Women, round 2 went well enough with all 3 teams advancing, but round 3 did not go so well. Both Akers/Turner lost to Xue/Xi and Branagh/May-T lost to Antonelli-Talita in straight sets. Kessy/Ross managed to advance in a 3-set win over Goller-Ludwig.
Tomorrow will be the semifinals and Kessy/Ross will play Antonelli/Talita while Larissa/Juliana will play Xue/Xi.
On the men's side, they only played round 1 and Gibb/Rosy advanced on a forfeit while Jennings/Keenan won easily over a Canadian pair. Unfortunately for the USA fans, Gibb/Rosy will play Rogers/Dalhausser in round 2 with the winner likely facing Fuerbringer/Lucena, so the USA can only have at most 2 teams in the semifinals.
There were no significant upsets in this round, though Gosch-Horst AUT losing to Dollinger-Windscheif GER is an upset.

Darn - I'm getting impatient for Misty to do better! MISSING Walsh and recovering from a torn achilles (full recovery at least a year) are a couple of huge things to overcome.

Today was the final day on the women's side.
Both semifinal matches were squeakers, with both coming down to a 15-13 3rd-set. Bad day for the Brazilians, as both partnerships lost. Kessy and Ross make yet another final, but get pretty well handled by the Xue/Xi pair from China, losing 21-17, 21-19 in the final. Larissa-Juliana defeated Antonelli-Talita in 2 for the bronze.
On the men's side, Fuerbringer/Lucena have their first bad day and lose to the even lower seeded Dollinger/Windscheif of Germany in their first playoff match. Rogers/Dalhausser are cruising into the semifinals, winning their sets by an average score of 21-12! Gibb/Rosy were one of their victims today.
Jennings/Keenan won a tough first match 15-13 in the third set against the 12th-seeded team from Poland. They were then the very fortunate beneficiaries of an injury forfeit from Harley/Pedro of Brazil just after Harley/Pedro pulled off the big upset of their 2nd-seeded compatriots Alison/Emanuel.
Tomorrow's semifinals will pit Rogers/Dalhausser against Brink-Reckerman of Germany in what will probably be the highest level match of the tournament. The other semifinal will see Jennings/Keenan against 13th-seeded Wu/Xu of China, a team that won both matches by 2 in the 3rd set today.

Kessy and Ross are turning into the real deal, proving their performance last year on the FIVB was no FLUKE! Last week they won the AVP Huntington Beach Open. They are doing it both nationally and inter-nationally. Thanks for all the posts eastivball!

It's true. And there were people on this board saying that Ross needed a different partner, blah blah blah. I thought to myself, wtf, Bross is the better of the two at this point. Experienced, a point scorer. I just didn't get why people thought Ross needed a different partner. I'm happy for them.
