Thanks butter. If I am looking at the correct teams the Youth National Team won't be selected until the end of July. It seems like a longer practice and preparation schedule than in past years? Will Plummer try out for the Youth National Team or will she be playing beach tournaments? Will Hodson try out for the Junior National Team? Second Tryout and Training Dates: July 18-28, 2015 12 athletes will be selected to continue training and travel together to Argentina on July 28. Friendly matches in Buenos Aires will commence on July 29. The team will head to Lima on Aug. 4 to acclimate until the tournament begins on Aug. 7. Competition Dates: Aug. 7-16, 2015, return to USA August 17
U.S. Women’s Junior National Team Schedule The team plus four alternates will meet in New Orleans on June 16 for training through June 27. The team may compete in some exhibition matches with the U.S. Collegiate National Team during this time, as well. On June 28, the team will depart for Cyprus to train and acclimate until the tournament begins on July 3. The 2015 FIVB Women's U20 World Championship will conclude on July 12 and the delegation will return to the United States on July 13.

Pacfan, your comments didn’t show up. Since the new version of proboards I have to click on preview and then write my comment below the space for the quoted comment. I don’t know if other computers work the same way.
Changing the subject, the percentage of students who accepted admission offers (yield) for the 2015 class turned out to much higher than the admissions department expected so there will be some rearranging of the dorm residents. I think this only impacts upper classmen, not the freshmen.
Stanford seems to have a number of walk-on recruits this year who could have gotten DI scholarships at other schools. Does McGehee keep her athletic scholarship for her senior year even though she is no longer with the team? Will Alade redshirt the first year? Will Courtney Bowen redshirt the first year?

I expect Hodson to start at outside along with Burgess. Does that mean that Howard gets moved to the right??

I expect Hodson to start at outside along with Burgess. Does that mean that Howard gets moved to the right?? It seems to me, that of the three, Hodson has the most experience on the right. Being new, she would probably also easily accept the position of right. Howard, while not a closer on the left, was still fairly effective. I believe Howard would have some difficulty transitioning to right. Hodson could be very effective on the right, maybe even similar to Lowe (although she isn't left-handed). So, I think, Hodson on the right is the most natural, without as much weakness.

I think with Hodson and Howard on the right it's a tradeoff and depends on what Dunning wants out of that position. Howard provides more defense and Hodson provides more offense. I'm more inclined to think Howard will stay on the left because it gives Madi a chance to spread the offense to both pins. It'll be easier to slot Howard in then at OH2 and rely on her passing without having her take on a huge offensive load.

I agree - it depends on whether Dunning is looking for offense or defense; that's what will determine who plays on the right. Doesn't Howard play OH1, not OH2?

Burgess will stay left. She's the teams best all around player. Hodson will be right there with her... Howard may find herself on the right or a DS.

I think you guys are saying that Hodson on the right is better for offense and Howard on the right is better for defense. Forgive my naivete, but why would Hodson on the right be a drop in defense? Doesn't she jump really high? Hasn't her experience with the NT shown that she can put up an effective block?

It seems like Hodson is a much better out-of-system hitter than Howard, thus if he wants offense, he goes with Hodson. However, Brittany Howard is amazing at middle back and that would be lost if she goes to the right. So if Dunning wants more of a defensive presence, he'll stick with Howard on the left. That's my thought process at least.

And why couldn't Howard be able to be middle back coming from the right, if both positions become 6-rotation? Clearly I don't get the rotation restrictions very well. To me, this keeps coming down to who will be effective on the right. So far, I haven't seen or heard of Howard being comfortable on the right. While I think there is a drop from Hodson to Howard on the left. I can't think of anyone who, as of now, could come close to Hodson on the right. I haven't heard of anyone being comfortable on the right. Unless someone steps up big time on the right, I don't see who else can fit in there besides Hodson (that is until 2016 when we hopefully get Plummer).

That's my thought process at least. Howard playing opposite the setter doesn't mean that she can't play middle back defensively while she's backrow. There will be a rotation where both Howard, Burgess, and the Libero are all backrow at the same time, but I fail to see how that's a problem. Frankly, I don't see the backcourt defense as having any tangible role in determining whether Howard/Hodson plays LS/RS. Perhaps passing rotations play a role (but only a rotation and a half is funky, depending on who the passers are) but I think the two biggest factors will be out of system hitting (which will be from the LS...who does that best) and probably equally important, RS blocking (who puts up the better block).

I don't think Bugg is a good enough back 5 setter and Hodson a strong enough RS attacker right now for the RS to become a truly effective out of system option. The quality of the forced back sets of Bugg's really started to decrease as the season went on. It was pretty noticeable.

The quality of the forced back sets of Bugg's really started to decrease as the season went on. It was pretty noticeable. I would call it more inconsistent from match to match. Bugg did a pretty good job isolating Boukather all season, especially with lower, quicker sets. But obviously isolation is only one part or the equation -- Boukather did a pretty good job using both off speed tips and cut shots when the set location and timing wasn't ideal. Howard can tip with he best of them, but not certain about her cut shots (although she is a solid sand player on the right side where the cut shot is a formidable weapon). Hodson definitely brings more heat and she has shown flexibility reading the block for someone so young. I really think the big issue for Stanford is not about who among Howard/Hodson plays LS or RS, but what happens defensively in the back row now that Gilbert is gone. If Stanford can cover Gilbert's loss effectively, then they should be top two or three and win the Pac-12 pretty easily. OTOH, look what happened to USC last year after Hagglund left. That was one big cluster-F.

Weird speculation on what's to be done with the outside hitters. Howard has rarely shown any flair for the right side. She's a good left side blocker, defender, and (with some movement issues) passer. No doubt, Dunning will experiment, but I'm hoping Hodson explodes at opposite.
