FYI: Cardinal team won all 4 games vs. White. I think Kevin wanted to see how some of his newcomers played with the seniors but also put 2 of his best blockers on the White team. And Xu and McClure were probably the best servers today. Still Cardinal was too strong with the 3 first team All-American seniors and really a 4th senior in Gates plus Kipp. Cardinal: Plummer Hentz Gray Gates Kipp Formico Vicini Fidelak M. Keefe White: Fitzmorris Campbell McClure Berty Xu Wilson C. Keefe Baird Two corrections: M Keefe was on White and Baird was on team Cardinal Thanks!

Stanford looking very good...I just came back from their open scrimmage. Honestly their 2nd team could easily be a top 10 team nationally. Impressed with newcomers Kipp, Xu and Gates. Our other freshmen Berty, Vicini and Baird will get better. Also Campbell is ready to breakout as a star. 3 consecutive aces from McClure against the starters, amazing digs as always from Hentz, powerful kills from Kipp and Plummer, solid blocks from Fitz and Gates, perfect sets from Gray and Xu. Can't wait to start the season! I wouldn't label the other team as 2nd team. Hambly said they split up the team evenly. We had starters on both sides. But I agree, they're pretty solid. Holly hitting with authority and blocking well. TEAM RED: Gray, Plummer, Kipp (Baird backrow), Gates, Vicini, Fidelak (Formico Back row), Sydney (serving sub for Vicini) TEAM WHITE: Xu, McClure, MKeefe/Berty, Fitz, Holly (played front row the whole time), CKeefe libero. Let me restate we could field 2 teams and the 2nd team would still be a top 10 team;-) this is the deepest team I've ever seen at Stanford

Berty played left front, at least some of the time. I have photos with both Berty and Fitz in the front row (4th set). Baird did play for Cardinal.

OK, wasn't there (damn!). Did Kipp pass well enough to play LOH? Since she's replacing a very good blocker, how did Gates block? How did Kipp block? Yeah, I think passing and blocking will be the difference this year.

Stanford fans: "Kipp was blocked a few times, so not sure if she's ready to start yet..."
Also, Stanford fans: "Kipp was hitting against Fitz and Campbell..."

Thanks for all the reporting on the scrimmage. I moved out of the Bay area some time ago so I don't attend these events.
Do the reports mean five pages of opinions next week about whether Kipp or McClure start? I'll join in. My guess is McClure because there is enough offense in various areas of the court so passing is the primary factor.

Yeah, I think passing and blocking will be the difference this year. The answer to your first question is no. Kipp only passed in one rotation and she did not fair too well. However, some of the serves were very tough. Stanford will attempt to hide her as a passer IMO -- sort of like when Vanjak was front row in 2016. Gates blocking was solid, while I think Kipp struggled a bit with this skill. Kipp was trying to block Fitz and Campbell, so pretty tough customers. I think blocking is the skill freshman usually have the most trouble mastering and it usually takes them a good season of matches to get their act together.

I thought Kipp played well, but I still don’t think her offense warrants benching McClure’s passing and back-row defense.
I was really impressed by Xu, especially her serving and back sets. It will be really interesting competition if Miner commits to Stanford. Hentz was spectacular as usual. We’ll be really good once we figure out the line-up, probably at the beginning of PAC-12 season or sometime midway through.

Agreed, I've always thought that there isn't really a need to replace McClure front row, especially when they just won the National Championship with virtually the same lineup (Gates isn't too shabby of a replacement for Alade.) However, I do see Kipp's offence as a very nice second option if things falter, or first option if Hambly decides to utilize Kipp in the front row. It'll be interesting to see come November what the lineup looks like. As for Miner, if she commits, Stanford could possibly run a 6-2 with Fidelak and Kipp on the right.

She would make an excellent coach someday.

Only issue is that 6-2s are not conducive to slides from middles. Campbell is much more effective off one foot.

As is vicini cause she is slightly undersized which makes 1 balls harder to get kills on.

The way I read the flovolleyball.tv website I can watch both Stanford matches next weekend with a monthly membership. Can someone confirm this? I don't understand how they set up cameras in so many gyms.
